DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nKrista Finstad Hanson\, Minnesota’s Historic House Museums\nHistory Revealed Series\nSeptember 28\, 2017\nThursday\, 7 p.m.\nRamsey County Library – Roseville\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for a new series\, History Revealed\, featuring the best of local history authors talking about a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nJoin Krista Finstad Hanson for an illustrated talk tracing the history and variety of Minnesota’s historic house museums — from majestic landmarks like Duluth’s Glensheen Mansion and St. Paul’s James J. Hill House\, to smaller residences lovingly restored by local communities and historical societies like the Gibbs Farm in Falcon Heights. Ms. Finstad Hanson will illustrate her talk with exterior images of these 19th- and 20th-century architectural gems. Following the talk\, Hanson will answer questions and sign copies of her book\, Minnesota Open House which will be available for purchase. \n \nKrista Finstad Hanson is the author of two travel guides to museums in historic houses: Minnesota Open House and Wisconsin’s Historic Houses and Living History Museums. She has also written a children’s science textbook\, The Great Barrier Reef: A Natural Wonder. Her writings focus on architectural history\, travel\, and homes\, and since 1992 she has written for such a number of local and national publications. Krista has been deeply involved in local history research through her involvement with the Hamline Midway History Corps. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nJohn Anfinson\, Fountains of Life and Death: The Origins of the Twin Cities Water Supply System\nHistory Revealed Series\nSeptember 21\, 2017\nThursday\, noon\nLandmark Center Gallery\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for a new series\, History Revealed\, featuring the best of local history authors talking about a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nIn this presentation\, John Anfinson examines the origins of the Minneapolis and St. Paul water supply systems. Unknowingly\, the two cities became a human experiment about the consequences of taking our drinking water for granted and of ignoring obvious solutions. Anfinson sets the Twin Cities in the context of water supply development in the nation. At a time when water supplies around the country are of great concern\, his talk reminds us of how far we have come but that we should not forget where our water comes from and what might be in it. \nDr. John Anfinson is the Superintendent of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area\, the Twin Cities National Park. Prior to his appointment\, he was Chief Resource Manager\, and the Historian and Cultural Resources Specialist. He was the District Historian\, St. Paul District\, Corps of Engineers\, 1980-2000\, and was the Chief of the District Cultural Resources Staff. Dr. Anfinson has degrees in History\, an M.A. in Anthropology\, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota. He is the author of The River We Have Wrought: A History of the Upper Mississippi (University of Minnesota Press\, 2005) and an author of River of History: A Historic Resources Study of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (2003)\, as well as numerous articles in Ramsey County History magazine and other publications. \nHistory Revealed Program Series\nPlease note that topics and speakers may change. DESCRIPTION:Bench Building Project for Gibbs Farm\n\nHelp us get ready for our fall field trip season!  \nWe need at least 10 more benches before hundreds of students come each week to learn about pioneer and Dakota life in the 1800s. \nThe project will be led by a staff member and includes building\, priming and if time allows\, painting the benches. We will have all materials\, supplies and instructions. We will be using drills\, so power tool experience is helpful\, but not necessary. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Fridays at Gibbs Farm to explore a craft\, garden or kitchen heritage topic\, focusing on the lives of the pioneers and of the Dakota people who lived and visited at Gibbs Farm. \nFridays\, 10:00 am-4:00 pm \n\nJune 9\, 2017 – Orchard Day\, Pest Control and Maintenance\nGibbs Farm Heritage Orchard will be open to the public and staffed by volunteers all day.\nTwo presentations about pests and maintenance. Staff will lead an apple craft for children.\nJune 16\, 2017 – Dakota Moons\nArtist and Site Interpreter Peggy Stern will prepare a demonstration and hands on art activity based on the Dakota Moons. Two presentation times.\nJune 23\, 2017 – Dakota Trade Day\nPresentation by staff in Bark lodge with the Gibbs Dakota Collection about Dakota trade followed by bracelet making activity. Quillwork and Beadmaking Demonstration with resident Dakota artist David Louis at 2:30 pm\, his presentation is on-going\, drop in when you like.\nJune 30\, 2017- Pioneer and Dakota Cooking \nDemonstrations of cooking on outdoor wood stove\, and over a campfire. Two demonstrations\, 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.\nJuly 7\, 2017 – Animal Day\nVisitors can take an animal tour in addition to Dakota and Farmhouse tours. Learn about farm animals in Pioneer times.\nJuly 14\, 2017 – Blacksmithing\nTerry Robertson is a retired dentist who has been participating in blacksmithing at Gibbs for over 40 years. There will be a chance for audience participation while she demonstrates blacksmithing techniques on her coal-fired forge.\nJuly 21\, 2017 – Turtle Medicine Garden Day\nTwo presentations about native plants and their uses\, based on research and work done on our Medicine Garden this year thanks to a grant from the St. Paul Garden Club.\nJuly 28\, 2017 – Pioneer and Dakota Game Day\nStaff will lead games played by Pioneer and Dakota children\, and a crafting activity.\nAugust 4\, 2017 – Orchard Day\, Apple Varieties\nGibbs Farm Heritage Orchard will be open to the public and staffed by volunteers all day. Two presentations and tastings. Staff will lead an apple craft for children.\nAugust 11\, 2017 – School House\nSchoolhouse program with “Ms. Lake.” Two presentation times TBA.\nAugust 18\, 2017 – Bees\nBell museum staff will have a table and honeybees from 1-4 pm.\nGibbs Farm will lead a candle dipping activity every hour.\nAugust 25\, 2017 – Archaeology\nSite interpreter Kassie Bradshaw-Kmitch will lead a presentation on the 1995 Soddy Archaeological dig. Visitors will be able to view artifacts from the dig.\n\n\nAdmission: $8 adults\, $7 seniors 62+\, $5 children ages 4-16. Free for RCHS members. \nEach topic will include a brief history and hands-on activity to take home. You can discover all this and much more at Gibbs Farm during Dakota Day\, on June 24\, 2017\, from 10 am-4 pm! \nDakota Day will highlight the stories and language\, the crafts\, the food and fun that are all part of the lives of the Dakota. The event is open to the public\, and provides an exciting and educational experience appropriate for families of all ages. Costumed interpreters will greet visitors\, and will provide activities\, tours\, and insights. \nWe are also excited to host a resident artist at Dakota Day this year. David Louis is a nationally-recognized Dakota artist\, whose work in quillwork and beading using traditional methods has been featured in museums and shops throughout the United States. David Louis grew up on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota reservation in a very traditional family. He took up the mission of learning quillwork on his own about 30 years ago when he realized it was in danger of dying out. By studying museum collections and talking with elders\, David gained a foundation for teaching himself the techniques of quillwork. David will be demonstrating his art during Dakota Day\, the culmination of a week-long residency at Gibbs Farm. Gibbs Farm tells the true story of the pioneering Gibbs family of Heman and Jane Gibbs and their friendship with the Dakota of Cloud Man’s village. Gibbs Farm offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore a unique story that spanned generations and ignored the cultural tensions of the time. The Dakota people and the Gibbs family achieved what society at large could not\, providing mutual aid and friendship. \nThe Dakota’s friendly interactions with the Gibbs\, and the hospitality shown by both sides began in 1835 when Jane DeBow (Gibbs) arrived at Fort Snelling as a child of eight\, and lived among Cloud Man’s band of Dakota on the shores of Lake Calhoun in present-day Minneapolis. She learned to speak Dakota and gained an intimate knowledge of the Dakota way of life. The Dakota gave her the name “Little Bird That Was Caught.” Later\, when Jane had married Heman Gibbs and they had acquired their farmstead where the Farm is today\, Cloud Man’s Dakota band\, sometimes numbering as many as 150\, camped on the Gibbs’ farm to rest and visit Jane\, often for as long as three weeks. Many in this band were Jane’s childhood friends\, and appreciated Heman and Jane’s hospitality. \nGibbs Farm continues that tradition today\, working closely in partnership with the Dakota community to provide educational opportunities to families\, schools and day campers about Minnesota’s First People. \nGibbs Farm offers a unique look at the two cultures that existed peacefully side by side at the farm\, their methods of housing and agriculture\, and provides insight into the Gibbs’ special relationship with the Dakota. Gibbs Farm has become nationally known for its presentations of historic pioneer and Dakota life and culture. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Fridays at Gibbs Farm to explore a craft\, garden or kitchen heritage topic\, focusing on the lives of the pioneers and of the Dakota people who lived and visited at Gibbs Farm. \nFridays\, 10:00 am-4:00 pm \n\nJune 9\, 2017 – Orchard Day\, Pest Control and Maintenance\nGibbs Farm Heritage Orchard will be open to the public and staffed by volunteers all day.\nTwo presentations about pests and maintenance. Staff will lead an apple craft for children.\nJune 16\, 2017 – Dakota Moons\nArtist and Site Interpreter Peggy Stern will prepare a demonstration and hands on art activity based on the Dakota Moons. Two presentation times.\nJune 23\, 2017 – Dakota Trade Day\nPresentation by staff in Bark lodge with the Gibbs Dakota Collection about Dakota trade followed by bracelet making activity. Quillwork and Beadmaking Demonstration with resident Dakota artist David Louis at 2:30 pm\, his presentation is on-going\, drop in when you like.\nJune 30\, 2017- Pioneer and Dakota Cooking \nDemonstrations of cooking on outdoor wood stove\, and over a campfire. Two demonstrations\, 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.\nJuly 7\, 2017 – Animal Day\nVisitors can take an animal tour in addition to Dakota and Farmhouse tours. Say hello to our Pigs\, Goats\, Sheep\, Chickens\, Geese and Ducks. Learn about farm animals in Pioneer times.\nJuly 14\, 2017 – Blacksmithing\nTerry Robertson is a retired dentist who has been participating in blacksmithing at Gibbs for over 40 years. There will be a chance for audience participation while she demonstrates blacksmithing techniques on her coal-fired forge.\nJuly 21\, 2017 – Turtle Medicine Garden Day\nTwo presentations about native plants and their uses\, based on research and work done on our Medicine Garden this year thanks to a grant from the St. Paul Garden Club.\nJuly 28\, 2017 – Pioneer and Dakota Game Day\nStaff will lead games played by Pioneer and Dakota children\, and a crafting activity.\nAugust 4\, 2017 – Orchard Day\, Apple Varieties\nGibbs Farm Heritage Orchard will be open to the public and staffed by volunteers all day. Author and historian Steve Trimble presents Mrs. Stewart’s work in preserving the Gibbs Farm\, founding the Ramsey County Historical Society and her contributions to the history of Ramsey County. He will also talk about his process and adventures in uncovering details of the life of this remarkable woman\, and will give insights into what it took for her and her contemporaries to save Gibbs Farm and its history for future generations. \nMrs. Ethel Hall Stewart\nSteve Trimble is an author\, a historian\, and a frequent contributor to the Dayton’s Bluff District Forum. He is a member of the Ramsey County Historical Society Editorial Board\, and has written a number of articles for their magazine\, Ramsey County History\, including two on Ethel Stewart and Gibbs Farm.
