DESCRIPTION:Help us gather and preserve some of the late summer bounty of herbs and flowers. We will pick\, wash and bundle herbs from the Gardens at Gibbs. We will also press some flowers for use in crafts and dyes this winter.  Try your hand at a couple different preservation methods\, and take home a couple bundles of herbs to dry or use fresh. She has been honored with artist-in-residencies in Arles\, France; Mesa Verde National Park\, Colorado; Hot Springs National Park\, Arkansas; St. Croix Watershed Research Station as the Artist at Pine Needles\, Minnesota; the Western Wisconsin Land Trust at the Pine Creek Restoration Project\, Wisconsin; Whiskeytown National Recreation Area\, California; and Juneau\, Alaska at the Ernest Gruening Historic Site. Jeanne has participated in International Urban Sketchers Symposiums in Portugal and the Netherlands.

Have fun with techniques that add pizazz to your page while learning about the architecture and history of the mid-nineteenth century homes in one of Saint Paul’s oldest neighborhoods! \nREGISTER:\nClick here to sign up: \nSUPPLIES:\nFee includes Neighborhood Architecture: Irvine Park St. Paul coloring book. Bring your favorite art-making media such as colored pencils\, watercolor sets\, and markers sets\, or play with various options available in the classroom. \nJEANNE KOSFELD BIO:\nArtist Jeanne Kosfeld paints primarily with water-based media\, but her large body of work also includes print design\, board game design\, and public sculpture. She began her career as a newspaper illustrator and cartoonist. Along her creative path\, she led the design department at the University of Alaska\, where she was also an adjunct faculty member. In Minnesota\, for eighteen years\, she was the creative director at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. \nKosfeld has won several awards\, and her work resides in many public and private collections. She has been honored with artist-in-residences around globe. \nCurrently\, she is illustrating architectural/historical coloring books for Ramsey County Historical Society along with architectural historian Richard Kronick.

DESCRIPTION:Gibbs Farm hosts a special program inspired by the new book release\, Grasshoppers in My Bed.\n\nJoin Terry Swanson\, historian and author of Grasshoppers in My Bed\, as she introduces Lillie at age 11 in 1877\, through 11 Grasshoppers in My Bed-inspired topics\, for 11 minutes each\, all right here on the farm where she grew up. You’ll love getting to know Lillie! Sessions are scheduled every 15 minutes beginning at 12:15.  Join in for a session or two\, or as many as you like!\n\n​Artist’s activity: Join Peggy Stern\, illustrator of Grasshoppers in My Bed\, for a 3-step journal making adventure\, based on illustrations from the book: Step 1 “Search & Draw” – a “treasure hunt” of the site\, Step 2 “Fold  & Create” – make an 8-page booklet to illustrate\, Step 3 “Dip & Write” – use a dip pen like Lillie Belle used to do. This activity is on-going throughout the day and can done at own pace.  Steps can be done individually or in order. Kick off the night with an outdoor concert from the Minnesota Sinfonia\, who will be performing at Gibbs Farm. Enjoy the sounds of “Music on the Lighter Side” with your family. This concert will include music from the movies\, Broadway\, waltzes\, tangos\, marches\, polka\, and much more!\n\n\nThe concert is from 7pm to 8pm\, but please feel free to arrive as early as 6pm and bring a picnic dinner to enjoy with your friends and family. Please bring your own seating such as lawn chairs or picnic blankets for this event. There will be limited picnic tables. Restrooms will be available.\n\nThe concert has no registration fee\, but we do request guests RSVP if they plan to attend.\nClick here to RSVP \nFollowing the concert\, stroll on over to the Bell Museum to experience Gaia\, a touring installation by UK artist Luke Jerram. At 23 feet in diameter and hanging in the museum’s Horizon Hall\, Gaia is a giant\, glowing sculpture of the Earth that features imagery from NASA’s Visible Earth Project. Guests will be introduced to the Gibbs Farm animals and trick-or-treat at the doors of the historic farmhouse. \nThe start of the trail is timed\, approximately 40 minutes long\, and ends at the exit of the site.  Prior registration is required.  Masks will be required for all visitors three and older. \n $8 for trick-or-treaters 3 and older\, $5 for non-trick-or-treaters (adults)\, free for children 2 and under. The author and illustrator will share the history and the architecture of Irvine Park’s fanciful Queen Anne-style homes\, simple clapboard houses\, and elaborate French Second Empire-style mansions\, and the story of the area and its inhabitants. \nWhat began as a casual sketch outing in Saint Paul’s charming Irvine Park neighborhood during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic became Neighborhood Architecture – Irvine Park\, Saint Paul: a coloring book. Twin Cities-based illustrator Jeanne Kosfeld and author Richard Kronick have together transformed a simple sketchbook featuring pen and ink drawings into a brief storytelling of the Irvine Park neighborhood’s unique 172-year history. She started her career as a newspaper illustrator and cartoonist. Along her creative path\, she led the design department at the University of Alaska\, where she was also an adjunct faculty member. In Minnesota\, she worked as the creative director at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts for eighteen years. \nKosfeld has won several awards\, and her work resides in many public and private collections. She has been honored with artist-in-residences around the globe. \nAbout the Author: Richard Kronick has been a full-time freelance writer since 1985\, specializing in architecture and engineering. He is the co-author with Rick Harrison and Greg Yoko of a 2010 book on suburban planning titled Prefurbia: Reinventing the Suburbs from Disdainable to Sustainable. Kronick has written over one hundred articles and reviews on the built environment and has planned and led more than sixty architecture tours in the Twin Cities\, the Midwest\, and Italy. He is a member of the board of directors of the nonprofit Preserve Minneapolis (PM) and is editor-in-chief of PM’s MinneapolisHistorical.org\, a guide to the city’s architecture. He often lectures and teaches continuing education courses on the history of architecture and is an expert on the Prairie School architects Purcell & Elmslie.

DESCRIPTION:Halloween Trick-or-Treat Trail – 2020\nSaturday October 31st\nTHIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT. \nBoo!  Book your visit to Gibbs Farm for the first ever socially distant trick-or-treat trail!  Dress up in costume and adventure down an outdoor path through the Gibbs Farm site.  Encounter fun and funny characters from storybooks and nursery rhymes like Mother Goose\, Little Bo Peep\, and the Big Bad Wolf\, all while collecting goodies! \nThe Gibbs Trick-or-Treat Trail will be a 30-40-minute adventure! \nPrior Online Registration for a specific time slot is required.  Book the experience for up to eight people in your group! Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. \nPricing (10% off for RCHS Members):\n1-2 Guests: $15\n3-4 Guests: $25\n5-6 Guests: $35\n7-8 Guests: $45 \nHow we are keeping our guests and staff safe: \n\nA limited number of groups will be on site at a given time. Each group will move together through each station and will not interact with other guests.\nThe trail is completely outdoors. Bathrooms will be available if required\, but all other buildings will be closed.\nThe trail is timed and one-way with an immediate exit to the parking lot.\nMasks will be required for the entirety of the visit (exceptions are children under the age of 2). Please follow CDC costume mask guidelines. Please also note that per CDC recommendations\, face shields cannot be used in place of a mask.  Disposable masks will be available if needed.\nCostumed characters along the trail will be at least 6 ft. from guests.\nStaff or guests who are feeling unwell will be ask not to attend.\n\nCancellation Policy: \n-Registration cancellations must be made one week in advance in order to be eligible for a refund.\n-If Gibbs Farm cancels the event due to inclement weather\, the decision will be made by Friday evening and all registrants will be contacted and receive refunds.\n-If Gibbs Farm cancels the event due to Covid-19 related business closures\, all registrants will be contacted and receive refunds.

DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED:  \nPlease watch for updates and event rescheduling. \nHelp us prepare the historic Gibbs Farm for the Spring field trip season! \nVolunteers are needed for active outdoor projects on our 8-acre site. These include turning compost\, preparing garden beds\, removing invasive species\, and bringing out benches and educational objects. \nThese projects are ideal for individuals\, families or groups and should be appropriate for students 12+. \nParticipants should dress for the weather and a little mud.  Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes are a must! Bring a lunch if you wish\, snacks and beverages will be provided. \n  \nMore Options for Group Volunteers \nGibbs Farm has a variety of projects for volunteer groups. Group volunteer projects are active and outdoor\, options may include painting\, gardening and light landscaping. These projects are designed to take two hours and are usually appropriate for groups of 7-25. Taste samples of our heirloom apples\, and try your hand at the cider press. \nWe’ll have games\, crafts and special treats including mini-straw bale maze\, line dancing\, and ice cream! It is a great day to tour the historic Gibbs Farmhouse and explore our restored prairie and learn about Dakota seasonal life. \nOur neighbor the Bell Museum will be back this year and Outdoor Painters of Minnesota will be capturing fall scenes! \nThe day includes live music from Light of the Moon\, and crafting demonstrations. All treats\, crafts and activities are included in admission. \nFood will be available for purchase or bring your own picnic! \n$8 Adults\, $7 Seniors\, $5 Children.
