SUMMARY:Fridays at Gibbs Farm: In Search of Lillie Belle Gibbs
DESCRIPTION:Gibbs Farm hosts a special program inspired by the new book release\, Grasshoppers in My Bed.\n\nJoin Terry Swanson\, historian and author of Grasshoppers in My Bed\, as she introduces Lillie at age 11 in 1877\, through 11 Grasshoppers in My Bed-inspired topics\, for 11 minutes each\, all right here on the farm where she grew up. You’ll love getting to know Lillie! Sessions are scheduled every 15 minutes beginning at 12:15.  Join in for a session or two\, or as many as you like!\n\nPeggy Stern\, artist and illustrator of Grasshoppers in My Bed\, will conduct an ongoing journal activity in three steps. As you take an adventure into Lillie’s world\, construct a simple paper journal booklet\, go on a hunt across the Gibbs Farm site in search of objects you will draw to fill the pages\, and try your hand at writing with pen and ink like Lillie did. A book signing is scheduled at 2:45\, but Terry and Peggy are happy to sign your copy anytime during the program. \n\nTo order or get more information Grasshoppers in My Bed\, see the book page and order form.\n\nThe site is open from 12:00pm to 3:00pm.  Allow time to enjoy the outdoor setting and visit the gift shop! DESCRIPTION:Enjoy Gibbs Farm with the author & illustrator \n\n\nGibbs Farm will start their summer Friday public hours with a special event!  On Friday\, June 17\, join a special tour\, threaded with details about Lillie Belle Gibbs led by the creators of Grasshoppers in My Bed (RCHS’s newest publication). \nStoryteller’s tour:  Author Terry Swanson will share selections from the book\, moving from schoolhouse to farmhouse porch\, parlor\, and summer kitchen\, where the scenes take place. See period décor and artifacts at each location and learn about Terry’s research-based creative process.  Tours start at 12:15\, 1:15\, and 2:15.  Each lasts 45 minutes\, including Q&A. \n​Artist’s activity: Join Peggy Stern\, illustrator of Grasshoppers in My Bed\, for a 3-step journal making adventure\, based on illustrations from the book: Step 1 “Search & Draw” – a “treasure hunt” of the site\, Step 2 “Fold  & Create” – make an 8-page booklet to illustrate\, Step 3 “Dip & Write” – use a dip pen like Lillie Belle used to do. This activity is on-going throughout the day and can done at own pace.  Steps can be done individually or in order. Please allow about an hour for all 3 steps. \nThe site is open from 12:00pm to 3:00pm.  Allow time to enjoy the outdoor setting and visit the gift shop! Also that day\, guests at Gibbs may take farmhouse and Dakota lifeways tours\, see farm animals\, and participate in a chore obstacle course and other farm demonstrations. \nAdmission is $8 adults\, $7 seniors\, $5 children over four. RCHS members are free. Pre-registration is recommended (but not required). Click here to register. \nThe new book Grasshoppers in My Bed: Lillie Belle Gibbs\, Minnesota Farm Girl\, 1877 by author Terry Swanson and illustrator Peggy Swanson is a work of historical fiction created to capture a year in the life of Jane and Heman Gibbs’ youngest daughter Lillie Belle Gibbs. The idea for the book sprouted during the first Gibbs Girl Day Camp years ago when a curious participant wondered aloud: “What was it really like to live on this farm back then?” \nBooks will be for sale at the author talk and in the Gibbs Farm giftshop for a reduced price of $16 for this event only. Regular cost is $20 and $18 for RCHS members.

DESCRIPTION:Gibbs Farm Trick-or-Treat Trail \nSaturday\, October 30\, 2021 \n10:00-2:00 (last entry is at 2pm) \nGrab your costume and venture down the Gibbs Farm trick-or-treat trail on Saturday\, October 30th!  Candy\, games\, and family fun!  Try your hand at pumpkin toss or pin a smile on the jack-o-lantern! Guests will be introduced to the Gibbs Farm animals and trick-or-treat at the doors of the historic farmhouse. \nThe start of the trail is timed\, approximately 40 minutes long\, and ends at the exit of the site.  Prior registration is required.  Masks will be required for all visitors three and older. \n $8 for trick-or-treaters 3 and older\, $5 for non-trick-or-treaters (adults)\, free for children 2 and under. Members receive free admission.  \nPlease arrive within your 15 minute arrival time frame. Please expect to wait up to 5 minutes before entering the trail.  \nCancellation Policy: \n-Registration cancellations must be made one week in advance in order to be eligible for a refund.\n-If Gibbs Farm cancels the event due to Covid-19 related business closures\, all registrants will be contacted and receive refunds.

Listen to music from Light of the Moon and get moving with some barn dancing for all levels. Bring your own picnic lunch! \nFront Lawn: Test your skill with a variety of apple games and challenges. \nFarmhouse Porch : We are bringing the Summer Kitchen Outdoors! DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Sinfonia will be performing outdoors at Gibbs Farm on Friday\, July 23rd. Enjoy the sounds of “Music on the Lighter Side” with your family! This concert with include music from the movies\, Broadway\, waltzes\, tangos\, marches\, and much more! The concert is from 7pm to 8pm\, but please feel free to arrive as early as 6pm and bring a picnic dinner to enjoy with your friends and family. Please bring your own seating such as lawn chairs or picnic blankets for this event. We ask that you set up your seating area 6 feet from other family groups. There will be limited picnic tables. \nThis event has no registration fee and does not require an RSVP\,  but we’d love to know if you plan to attend. Please RSVP if you plan to attend! \nIn the event of inclement weather\, a rain date has been set for Monday\, July 26th. The author and illustrator will share the history and the architecture of Irvine Park’s fanciful Queen Anne-style homes\, simple clapboard houses\, and elaborate French Second Empire-style mansions\, and the story of the area and its inhabitants. \nWhat began as a casual sketch outing in Saint Paul’s charming Irvine Park neighborhood during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic became Neighborhood Architecture – Irvine Park\, Saint Paul: a coloring book. Twin Cities-based illustrator Jeanne Kosfeld and author Richard Kronick have together transformed a simple sketchbook featuring pen and ink drawings into a brief storytelling of the Irvine Park neighborhood’s unique 172-year history. Artists of all ages and abilities can colorize their own imagined versions of these historic edifices. \nNeighborhood Architecture – Irvine Park\, Saint Paul: a coloring book will be available from RCHS in April.\nNeighborhood Architecture – Irvine Park\, Saint Paul: a coloring book will be available in softcover with 18 house sketches\, brief histories of the homes’ owners and architecture; and an architectural style guide and glossary at the end of the 48-page book. $18.99 regular price\, $15.00 for RCHS members. Shipping will be additional. \nTo order books\, use the order form here. \nAbout the Illustrator: Artist Jeanne Kosfeld paints primarily with water-based media\, but her large body of work also includes print and board game design and public sculpture. She started her career as a newspaper illustrator and cartoonist. Along her creative path\, she led the design department at the University of Alaska\, where she was also an adjunct faculty member. In Minnesota\, she worked as the creative director at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts for eighteen years. \nKosfeld has won several awards\, and her work resides in many public and private collections. She has been honored with artist-in-residences around the globe. \nAbout the Author: Richard Kronick has been a full-time freelance writer since 1985\, specializing in architecture and engineering. He is the co-author with Rick Harrison and Greg Yoko of a 2010 book on suburban planning titled Prefurbia: Reinventing the Suburbs from Disdainable to Sustainable. Kronick has written over one hundred articles and reviews on the built environment and has planned and led more than sixty architecture tours in the Twin Cities\, the Midwest\, and Italy. He is a member of the board of directors of the nonprofit Preserve Minneapolis (PM) and is editor-in-chief of PM’s MinneapolisHistorical.org\, a guide to the city’s architecture. He often lectures and teaches continuing education courses on the history of architecture and is an expert on the Prairie School architects Purcell & Elmslie.

DESCRIPTION:Halloween Trick-or-Treat Trail – 2020\nSaturday October 31st\nTHIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT. \nBoo!  Book your visit to Gibbs Farm for the first ever socially distant trick-or-treat trail!  Dress up in costume and adventure down an outdoor path through the Gibbs Farm site.  Encounter fun and funny characters from storybooks and nursery rhymes like Mother Goose\, Little Bo Peep\, and the Big Bad Wolf\, all while collecting goodies! \nThe Gibbs Trick-or-Treat Trail will be a 30-40-minute adventure! \nPrior Online Registration for a specific time slot is required.  Book the experience for up to eight people in your group! Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. \nPricing (10% off for RCHS Members):\n1-2 Guests: $15\n3-4 Guests: $25\n5-6 Guests: $35\n7-8 Guests: $45 \nHow we are keeping our guests and staff safe: \n\nA limited number of groups will be on site at a given time. Each group will move together through each station and will not interact with other guests.\nThe trail is completely outdoors. Bathrooms will be available if required\, but all other buildings will be closed.\nThe trail is timed and one-way with an immediate exit to the parking lot.\nMasks will be required for the entirety of the visit (exceptions are children under the age of 2). These include turning compost\, preparing garden beds\, removing invasive species\, and bringing out benches and educational objects. \nThese projects are ideal for individuals\, families or groups and should be appropriate for students 12+. \nParticipants should dress for the weather and a little mud.  Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes are a must! Bring a lunch if you wish\, snacks and beverages will be provided. \n  \nMore Options for Group Volunteers \nGibbs Farm has a variety of projects for volunteer groups. Group volunteer projects are active and outdoor\, options may include painting\, gardening and light landscaping. These projects are designed to take two hours and are usually appropriate for groups of 7-25.
