DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nKrista Finstad Hanson\, Japanese American Resettlement to St. Paul during World War II: The International Institute\, The War Relocation Authority\, and Ruth & Earl Tanabara\nHistory Revealed Series\nOctober 25\, 2018\nThursday\, 7:00 pm\nRamsey County Roseville Library\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for History Revealed\, our program series featuring presentations and tours from the best of local historians\, authors and archaeologists\, with a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nKrista Finstad Hanson\, a local writer\, historian and teacher\, will present her research findings about largely untold accounts of Japanese Americans’ efforts to begin their lives anew in St. Paul\, and the local people that aided these efforts during World War II. Ruth Nomura Tanbara and her husband Earl were the first formally resettled couple in Saint Paul. She had worked for the International Institute in San Francisco and they were able to leave the coast in August of 1942 with special travel documents. They came to St. Paul and began working here to help resettle Japanese Americans. Eventually the Tanbara and Nomura extended families were resettled to St. Paul\, among many others. \nFeatured image: Photograph was taken at New Year’s Eve at the YWCA in downtown St. Paul\, 1942.  Hosts are Earl (7th from the left) and Ruth Tanbara (4th from the left). The guests pictured are resettled Japanese American young women and Military Intelligence Service soldiers training at Fort Snelling. From Around the World In St. Paul by Alice Sickels\, University of Minnesota Press\, 1945. \nKrista Finstad Hanson is the author of two travel guides to museums in historic houses: Minnesota Open House and Wisconsin’s Historic Houses and Living History Museums. She has also written a children’s science textbook\, The Great Barrier Reef: A Natural Wonder. Her writings focus on architectural history\, travel\, and homes\, and since 1992 she has written for such a number of local and national publications. Krista has been deeply involved in local history research through her involvement with the Hamline Midway History Corps. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nBill Lindeke\, Saint Paul – Then & Now\n\nHistory Revealed Series\nSeptember 27\, 2018\nThursday\, 7:00 pm\nRamsey County Roseville Library\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for History Revealed\, our program series featuring presentations and tours from the best of local historians\, authors and archaeologists\, with a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nLocked together in an affectionate sibling rivalry\, Minneapolis and its twin city St. Paul are constantly growing and changing. Geographer & author Bill Lindeke will discuss how the Twin Cities have developed from simple trading posts on the banks of the Mississippi in “the land of 10\,000 lakes\,” and will show photos from his new coffee table book\, “Minneapolis-St. Paul: Then and Now” (Pavilion Press). \nBill will highlight the most interesting places in Saint Paul and the Twin Cities that show the most change from the 19th century to current times with historic and current photographs and offer in-depth descriptions of the sites. The “then” photos are historic images which range from the 1870s to the 1950s. The “now” photos were taken in the summer of 2017 by Karl Mondon of San Francisco\, California. Bill will also show sites that “didn’t make the cut” into the book. \n“Minneapolis-St. Paul Then and Now” has historic and current photos with historical narrative captions for over one hundred historic sites in Minneapolis\, Saint Paul\, South Saint Paul\, Edina\, and the Fort Snelling Unorganized Territory. \nThe book will be available for purchase and signing at the presentation. \nPlease Note: The Roseville Library does not have an available connection that allows us to take credit cards\, so we are not always able to accommodate credit card sales. Cash and checks will be accepted. \nBill Lindeke is an urban geographer who writes\, researches\, and gives tours about the Twin Cities. SUMMARY:Prairie Festival: Celebrating the Dakota\, Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Minnesota’s First People.\nCelebrating the Dakota\, Past and Present \nPrograms for the day will include stations where guests can learn about the seasonal life of the Dakota of Cloud Man’s Village: Wild Ricing\, Tipi Life\, a tour of our replica Bark Lodge\, and much more! U of MN Dakota Language Instructors will be leading mini-language sessions and Site Interpreter Nick Anderson will also be demonstrating traditional and modern hide tanning techniques. \nOther activities from our partners include: \nDakota Wicohan is excited to participate in the upcoming Prairie Festival at Gibbs Farm. We will be bringing our Wikoska/Wiciyenna as they represent the very essence of Dakota Wicohan. Dressed in their traditional skirts\, these youth will be singing Dakota songs\, showcasing the kinship sisterhood these young women have developed. We will also be bringing some artwork that the youth painted as well as some horse regalia that some of the staff have created. All in all\, this is guaranteed to be a fun event. We look forward to seeing everybody there! \nDakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye will be showcasing their language materials including their upcoming language dictionary app. \nNative Food Perspectives will be serving Wild Rice Salad\, Cornbread Muffins and Cedar Tea. Food is included in ticket price\, but is limited to a first come\, first serve basis. \nBeadwork Artist Raine Cloud will be showcasing her artwork. \nCheck back as more program information and times are added! \nIncluded in general admission:\n$8 adults\, $7 seniors 62+\, $5 children 3 and up\nFree for RCHS members\nThe festival will take place from 10am-2pm. DESCRIPTION:Even though the warm weather is taking its time\, field trip season is fast approaching and we need help doing some outdoor spring clean-up! Projects include garden prep\, trash pickup and minor landscaping. This is a great time to learn about additional volunteer opportunities at Gibbs Farm\, plus volunteers will receive a complimentary admission for our opening weekend. Projects are suitable for participants 11 and up. This is a fun way for students to give back to their community and earn service hours. Groups are also welcome. Sign up by emailing clare@rchs.com. \nWe will have all the materials and instructions needed for the projects as well as snacks! Participants should wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get a little dirty. Bring work gloves if you like. \nCan’t make it on the 21st? We have a second Volunteer Day on May 12th!

DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society is proud to partner with TPT-Twin Cities PBS to produce a ground-breaking new documentary\, North Star: Civil War Stories\, which uncovers hidden details of African-American men from Minnesota involved in the Civil War. Using emerging research and scholarship\, North Star: Civil War Stories looks at the lives and contributions of these men during and after the war. \nFour stories bring to light the hidden histories of African American Minnesotans during and after the Civil War. He was a Production Fellow for the PBS documentary Slavery by Another Name\, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Bergin won a regional Emmy Award for Slavery By Another Name: Behind the Scenes. His other notable productions include regional Emmy-winners Asian Flavors\, North Star: Minnesota’s Black Pioneers; Lowertown: The Rise of an Urban Village; Cass Gilbert: Standing the Test of Time. His literary history documentary\, Literature & Life: The Givens Collection was named “Best History Documentary” at the Prized Pieces International Black Film Festival. His documentary With Impunity: Men & Gender Violence was named “Best Documentary of 2012” by Mpls/St. Paul Magazine. In addition to long-form documentary work\, Bergin received a regional Emmy award for Legacy Letters\, a PSA series about celebrating and protecting Minnesota’s natural\, historical\, and cultural heritage. Bergin produced exhibit videos for the Science Museum of Minnesota’s award-winning touring exhibit “Race: Are We So Different?” He also produced a companion program for broadcast. \nThe filmmaker’s short narrative films have screened at the American Film Institute\, the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival\, The Wexner Center\, and the Hollywood Black Film Festival.  In the 1990s\, Daniel Bergin produced the ground breaking “Don’t Believe the Hype\,” TPT’s Emmy award winning youth media program. \nThe Minneapolis native and University of Minnesota graduate has served as a director on the boards of several community media organizations including Intermedia Arts\, St. Paul Neighborhood Network\, Hennepin Theatre Trust\, and IFP MN. He was on the Walker Art Center’s Parent Advisory Council. Daniel is an adjunct instructor at St. Cloud State University. He has been recognized as a MN State Arts Board Fellow\, a 2003 Twin Cities Business Journal’s “40 under 40”\, a City Pages Artist of the Year\, attended the esteemed PBS Producers Academy\, and was awarded a Bush Leadership Fellowship for his work in community media. \nWilliam (Bill) Green received his B.A. in History from Gustavus Adolphus College\, and his M.A.\, Ph.D. and J.D. from the University of Minnesota. He has published articles\, op-ed pieces\, and book chapters on history\, law\, and education\, and he has published two books on race and civil rights in Minnesota history-A Peculiar Imbalance in Early Minnesota: 1837-1869\, and Degrees of Freedom: The Origin of Civil Rights in Minnesota\, 1865-1914\, which won the 2015 Minnesota Book Award-Hognander Prize. He is presently working on a history of Minnesota during the period of the Civil War and Reconstruction. \nBill has spoken widely at such places as the Ramsey County Bar Association; Bethel Lutheran Church\, the Friends of the Ramsey County Library; Unity Unitarian Universalist Church in St. Paul\, and William Mitchell Law School. He has also lectured at Peabody College-Vanderbilt University\, St. John’s University\, and Lincoln College-Oxford University. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nJohn Watson Milton\, For the Good of the Order: Nick Coleman\n\nHistory Revealed Series\nNovember 30\, 2017\nThursday\, 7:00 pm\nRamsey County Roseville Library\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for a new series\, History Revealed\, featuring the best of local history authors talking about a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nJohn Watson Milton will present the story of Nick Coleman\, the son of Irish immigrants who was an influential Minnesota state senator in the 1960’s and 1970’s\, and had an unsuccessful run for Governor. Coleman was instrumental in changing the Minnesota legislative branch and its agenda to a more progressive and respected one\, and was also instrumental in passing many reforms\, including the “Minnesota Miracle\,” legislation that shifted the burden for public education from property taxes to a more progressive state income tax. The presentation will touch on Coleman’s work and accomplishments\, the many great leaders he worked with from both sides of the political line\, and his legacy to Minnesota\, the nation and his family. \nMilton is the author of For the Good of the Order\, Nick Coleman and the High Tide of Liberal Politics in Minnesota\, published by RCHS. Books will be available for purchase. \n \nJohn Watson Milton was born in St. Paul\, Minnesota. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton and the Woodrow Wilson School; he also studied at the Harvard School of Business. At Princeton he was the editorial chairman of The Daily Princetonian. Milton has published a wide variety of written works\, including poetry\, essay\, recipes\, speeches and short stories. He has written numerous articles for Ramsey County History magazine\, and authored For the Good of the Order\, Nick Coleman and the High Tide of Liberal Politics in Minnesota\, published by RCHS. His biographical novel\, The Fallen Nightingale\, won two national awards for historical fiction. The author lives with his Panamanian-born wife\, Maureen Angélica Acosta\, on a small farm in Afton\, Minnesota\, where he writes and grows wine-grapes. \nAs a Princeton sophomore\, Milton received a piece of valuable advice from Nobel Laureate Ernest Hemingway\, who told him: “If you’re a writer\, you write. No matter what happened last night\, no matter how much you drank\, no matter whose bed you climbed out of in the morning\, you write. Hill House\, to smaller residences lovingly restored by local communities and historical societies like the Gibbs Farm in Falcon Heights. Ms. Finstad Hanson will illustrate her talk with exterior images of these 19th- and 20th-century architectural gems. Unknowingly\, the two cities became a human experiment about the consequences of taking our drinking water for granted and of ignoring obvious solutions. Anfinson sets the Twin Cities in the context of water supply development in the nation. At a time when water supplies around the country are of great concern\, his talk reminds us of how far we have come but that we should not forget where our water comes from and what might be in it. \nDr. John Anfinson is the Superintendent of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area\, the Twin Cities National Park. Prior to his appointment\, he was Chief Resource Manager\, and the Historian and Cultural Resources Specialist. He was the District Historian\, St. Paul District\, Corps of Engineers\, 1980-2000\, and was the Chief of the District Cultural Resources Staff. Dr. Anfinson has degrees in History\, an M.A. in Anthropology\, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota. He is the author of The River We Have Wrought: A History of the Upper Mississippi (University of Minnesota Press\, 2005) and an author of River of History: A Historic Resources Study of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (2003)\, as well as numerous articles in Ramsey County History magazine and other publications. \nHistory Revealed Program Series\nPlease note that topics and speakers may change.
