These include turning compost\, preparing garden beds\, removing invasive species\, and bringing out benches and educational objects. \nThese projects are ideal for individuals\, families or groups and should be appropriate for students 12+. \nParticipants should dress for the weather and a little mud.  Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes are a must! Bring a lunch if you wish\, snacks and beverages will be provided. \n  \nMore Options for Group Volunteers \nGibbs Farm has a variety of projects for volunteer groups. Group volunteer projects are active and outdoor\, options may include painting\, gardening and light landscaping. These projects are designed to take two hours and are usually appropriate for groups of 7-25. Using emerging research and scholarship\, North Star: Civil War Stories looks at the lives and contributions of these men during and after the war. \nFour stories bring to light the hidden histories of African American Minnesotans during and after the Civil War. In addition to long-form documentary work\, Bergin received a regional Emmy award for Legacy Letters\, a PSA series about celebrating and protecting Minnesota’s natural\, historical\, and cultural heritage. Bergin produced exhibit videos for the Science Museum of Minnesota’s award-winning touring exhibit “Race: Are We So Different?” He also produced a companion program for broadcast. \nThe filmmaker’s short narrative films have screened at the American Film Institute\, the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival\, The Wexner Center\, and the Hollywood Black Film Festival.  In the 1990s\, Daniel Bergin produced the ground breaking “Don’t Believe the Hype\,” TPT’s Emmy award winning youth media program. \nThe Minneapolis native and University of Minnesota graduate has served as a director on the boards of several community media organizations including Intermedia Arts\, St. Paul Neighborhood Network\, Hennepin Theatre Trust\, and IFP MN. He was on the Walker Art Center’s Parent Advisory Council. Daniel is an adjunct instructor at St. Cloud State University. He has been recognized as a MN State Arts Board Fellow\, a 2003 Twin Cities Business Journal’s “40 under 40”\, a City Pages Artist of the Year\, attended the esteemed PBS Producers Academy\, and was awarded a Bush Leadership Fellowship for his work in community media. \nWilliam (Bill) Green received his B.A. in History from Gustavus Adolphus College\, and his M.A.\, Ph.D. and J.D. from the University of Minnesota. He has published articles\, op-ed pieces\, and book chapters on history\, law\, and education\, and he has published two books on race and civil rights in Minnesota history-A Peculiar Imbalance in Early Minnesota: 1837-1869\, and Degrees of Freedom: The Origin of Civil Rights in Minnesota\, 1865-1914\, which won the 2015 Minnesota Book Award-Hognander Prize. He is presently working on a history of Minnesota during the period of the Civil War and Reconstruction. \nBill has spoken widely at such places as the Ramsey County Bar Association; Bethel Lutheran Church\, the Friends of the Ramsey County Library; Unity Unitarian Universalist Church in St. Paul\, and William Mitchell Law School. He has also lectured at Peabody College-Vanderbilt University\, St. John’s University\, and Lincoln College-Oxford University. Ms. Finstad Hanson will illustrate her talk with exterior images of these 19th- and 20th-century architectural gems. Following the talk\, Hanson will answer questions and sign copies of her book\, Minnesota Open House which will be available for purchase. \n \nKrista Finstad Hanson is the author of two travel guides to museums in historic houses: Minnesota Open House and Wisconsin’s Historic Houses and Living History Museums. Her writings focus on architectural history\, travel\, and homes\, and since 1992 she has written for such a number of local and national publications. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nStephen Osman: Fort Snelling and the Civil War\nHistory Revealed Series\nApril 20\, 2017\nThursday\, 7 p.m.\nRamsey County Library – Roseville\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for a new series\, History Revealed\, featuring the best of local history authors talking about a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nOn April 20\, Stephen Osman discusses the role of Fort Snelling as a major military station in Minnesota during the Civil War\, and presents his new book\, “Fort Snelling and the Civil War\,” to be released this spring by the Ramsey County Historical Society. Stephen will be available for questions\, and to sign books. \nOne hundred fifty years ago our state offered the first volunteers to defend the Union. Every Minnesota soldier passed through historic Fort Snelling\, reactivated after it had been sold to a developer. The Fort eventually expanded to include several large camps of Native Americans\, massive stock yards\, huge warehouses\, and secure barracks for draftees before reverting to a supply depot in 1865. \nStephen Osman managed Historic Fort Snelling for over three decades and actively researches\, speaks and writes about Minnesota’s role in the Civil War and the U.S. Dakota War of 1862. Osman served with the US Army Reserve in Psychological Operations at Fort Snelling\, and has served on the boards of the Minnesota Military Museum\, the Friends of Fort Snelling\, the Twin Cities Civil War Roundtable. \nPlease join RCHS and Stephen Osman on April 20 for this fascinating discussion and book signing. No reservations needed. \nLearn more about the early inhabitants of our area as archaeologist Jeremy Nienow presents findings from last summer’s 2016 volunteer archaeological survey around Lake Vadnais\, sponsored by the North Lake Owasso Neighborhood Group. \nDr. Nienow has been working with the North Lake Owasso Neighborhood Group and the Shoreview Historical Society to expand the archaeological findings along some of the Shoreview area lakes. Their work began with the goal of discovering the historical Native American passage through the areas of Lakes Owasso and Wabasso. Artifacts and science led one mile east to Vadnais Lake in 2016 with yet more results. Both 2015 and 2016 on-site shovel tests and artifact findings are now documented and submitted to the State of MN. The concert is a partnership with Saint Paul Civic Symphony and Landmark Center’s Sundays at Landmark series. \nFebruary 1-4\, in the F.K. Weyerhaeuser Auditorium\, the second annual Frozen Film Festival returns to the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. The film festival celebrates Independent Film\, while enhancing Saint Paul as an artistic center for the Midwest. \nFriday\, February 3\, 6-9 pm\, The Saint Paul Bouncing Team will hold tryouts in Landmark Center’s Musser Cortile\, free and open to spectators. These aerial acrobatics\, inspired by an Eskimo hunting tradition\, are among the oldest performances in the Winter Carnival’s history and continues to impress fans today. \nSaturday\, February 4\, 12-5 pm\, stop by Landmark Center for free entertainment and events for all ages. A DJ will entertain\, as well as appearences from local celebrities and the newly crowned Saint Paul Winter Carnival Royalty! DESCRIPTION:Join us in commemorating the Rondo Neighborhood. \nGroundbreaking Ceremony for the Rondo Commemorative Plaza\nOn Friday\, October 14\, at 1:30 pm join us for the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Rondo Commemorative Plaza. The soon-to-be constructed Rondo Commemorative Plaza (RCP) creates both a physical landmark and virtual experience where visitors learn the story of the Rondo neighborhood. This project will transform a vacant plot of land into a focal point\, preserving and sharing local history. \n\nA vacant lot on Concordia Avenue – formerly Rondo Avenue — will be the site of a groundbreaking ceremony for the Rondo Commemorative Plaza. The event takes place on October 14 at 1:30 pm. at 820 Concordia Avenue (at Fisk Street) in Saint Paul. \nThe ceremony will be open to the public. There will be a reception from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center\, 270 N. Kent Street\, Saint Paul\, MN. The public will be able to review and purchase naming opportunities to etch their names in various locations at the plaza. \nEvent website \nThe lot looks out upon I-94\, the freeway that destroyed the thriving Rondo Neighborhood\, which for many years was the home to nearly 80 percent of the African Americans in the city. The Plaza will engage visitors with a multi-media presentation that includes audio-video remembrances of the social\, political and cultural life of the “Golden Age” of Rondo. \n“The destruction of Rondo was a wound that has never quite healed\,” said Marvin Anderson\, project coordinator and co-founder of Rondo Avenue Inc. “This plaza is an attempt to move forward into an era of reconciliation\, and a future that welcomes a growing diversity of immigrant communities to the neighborhood.” \nThe keynote speaker will be a son of Rondo\, David V. Taylor\, Ph.D.\, a historian and former dean of the General College of the University of Minnesota will deliver remarks: Hallowed Ground: Sites of African American Memories. Emcee for the program will be T. Mychael Rambo. \nFunds for the purchase of the land and the construction of the plaza came from a $250\,000 Community Block Development Grant from the City of Saint Paul\, and financial support from the F. G.
