No reservations needed. \nLearn more about the early inhabitants of our area as archaeologist Jeremy Nienow presents findings from last summer’s 2016 volunteer archaeological survey around Lake Vadnais\, sponsored by the North Lake Owasso Neighborhood Group. \nDr. Nienow has been working with the North Lake Owasso Neighborhood Group and the Shoreview Historical Society to expand the archaeological findings along some of the Shoreview area lakes. Their work began with the goal of discovering the historical Native American passage through the areas of Lakes Owasso and Wabasso. Artifacts and science led one mile east to Vadnais Lake in 2016 with yet more results. Both 2015 and 2016 on-site shovel tests and artifact findings are now documented and submitted to the State of MN. DESCRIPTION:Join us in commemorating the Rondo Neighborhood. \nGroundbreaking Ceremony for the Rondo Commemorative Plaza\nOn Friday\, October 14\, at 1:30 pm join us for the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Rondo Commemorative Plaza. The soon-to-be constructed Rondo Commemorative Plaza (RCP) creates both a physical landmark and virtual experience where visitors learn the story of the Rondo neighborhood. This project will transform a vacant plot of land into a focal point\, preserving and sharing local history. \n\nA vacant lot on Concordia Avenue – formerly Rondo Avenue — will be the site of a groundbreaking ceremony for the Rondo Commemorative Plaza. The event takes place on October 14 at 1:30 pm. at 820 Concordia Avenue (at Fisk Street) in Saint Paul. \nThe ceremony will be open to the public. There will be a reception from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center\, 270 N. Kent Street\, Saint Paul\, MN. The public will be able to review and purchase naming opportunities to etch their names in various locations at the plaza. \nEvent website \nThe lot looks out upon I-94\, the freeway that destroyed the thriving Rondo Neighborhood\, which for many years was the home to nearly 80 percent of the African Americans in the city. The Plaza will engage visitors with a multi-media presentation that includes audio-video remembrances of the social\, political and cultural life of the “Golden Age” of Rondo. \n“The destruction of Rondo was a wound that has never quite healed\,” said Marvin Anderson\, project coordinator and co-founder of Rondo Avenue Inc. “This plaza is an attempt to move forward into an era of reconciliation\, and a future that welcomes a growing diversity of immigrant communities to the neighborhood.” \nThe keynote speaker will be a son of Rondo\, David V. Taylor\, Ph.D.\, a historian and former dean of the General College of the University of Minnesota will deliver remarks: Hallowed Ground: Sites of African American Memories. Emcee for the program will be T. Mychael Rambo. \nFunds for the purchase of the land and the construction of the plaza came from a $250\,000 Community Block Development Grant from the City of Saint Paul\, and financial support from the F. G. SUMMARY:HIV/AIDS Oral History Project
DESCRIPTION:Help RCHS Save Lives:\nThe HIV/AIDS Oral History Project\nRCHS is collecting oral histories to save lives. We are documenting the appalling gap between identifying HIV/AIDS as a health crisis and the full-scale response required to develop effective treatments\, a delay that allowed the deaths of thousands. A total of 35 oral histories are being recorded and the results are being provided to lawmakers across the country to encourage faster responses to current and future medical crisis. The project recently received a matching $10\,000 challenge grant from the Jay & Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Minnesota. \nYou can help – learn more here!
