DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Minnesota’s First People.\nCelebrating the Dakota\, Past and Present \nPrograms for the day will include stations where guests can learn about the seasonal life of the Dakota of Cloud Man’s Village: Wild Ricing\, Tipi Life\, a tour of our replica Bark Lodge\, and much more! U of MN Dakota Language Instructors will be leading mini-language sessions and Site Interpreter Nick Anderson will also be demonstrating traditional and modern hide tanning techniques. \nOther activities from our partners include: \nDakota Wicohan is excited to participate in the upcoming Prairie Festival at Gibbs Farm. We will be bringing our Wikoska/Wiciyenna as they represent the very essence of Dakota Wicohan. Dressed in their traditional skirts\, these youth will be singing Dakota songs\, showcasing the kinship sisterhood these young women have developed. We will also be bringing some artwork that the youth painted as well as some horse regalia that some of the staff have created. All in all\, this is guaranteed to be a fun event. We look forward to seeing everybody there! \nDakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye will be showcasing their language materials including their upcoming language dictionary app. \nNative Food Perspectives will be serving Wild Rice Salad\, Cornbread Muffins and Cedar Tea. Food is included in ticket price\, but is limited to a first come\, first serve basis. \nBeadwork Artist Raine Cloud will be showcasing her artwork. \nCheck back as more program information and times are added! \nIncluded in general admission:\n$8 adults\, $7 seniors 62+\, $5 children 3 and up\nFree for RCHS members\nThe festival will take place from 10am-2pm. DESCRIPTION:Even though the warm weather is taking its time\, field trip season is fast approaching and we need help doing some outdoor spring clean-up! Projects include garden prep\, trash pickup and minor landscaping. This is a great time to learn about additional volunteer opportunities at Gibbs Farm\, plus volunteers will receive a complimentary admission for our opening weekend. Projects are suitable for participants 11 and up. This is a fun way for students to give back to their community and earn service hours. Groups are also welcome. Sign up by emailing clare@rchs.com. \nWe will have all the materials and instructions needed for the projects as well as snacks! Our knowledgeable volunteers will be available to answer your toughest apple questions \nOur new neighbor\, The Bell Museum of Natural History will join in on the fun by bringing over a pop-up museum! The Bell will be bringing their traveling beehives\, models of flowers and food\, and a microscope activity\, so you can discover the special role that pollinators play in our food production. \nGet creative!  Make apple crafts to take home! Craft activities include\, apple block prints\, dried apple necklaces\, and apple magnets. Play apple games and listen to apple stories and apple lore! \nWatch the artists from Outdoor Painters of Minnesota as they create beautiful works of art directly on the Gibbs Farm site! The artists will be available to answer questions about their processes and will be capturing the day as it unfolds and the beauty of Gibbs Farm in the Fall. Some works of art may be for sale. \nTreats! In addition to heritage variety sampling and mini caramel apple dipping\, you can head over to the red barn for a special apple treat served with our famous homemade vanilla ice cream and seasonal beverages. \nNeed something more substantial for an entire day of apple fun? Wanted to make your own beaded bracelet? Or discover why trade was important to Dakota people in the early 1800s? You can discover all this and much more at Gibbs Farm during Dakota Day\, on June 24\, 2017\, from 10 am-4 pm! \nDakota Day will highlight the stories and language\, the crafts\, the food and fun that are all part of the lives of the Dakota. The event is open to the public\, and provides an exciting and educational experience appropriate for families of all ages. Costumed interpreters will greet visitors\, and will provide activities\, tours\, and insights. \nWe are also excited to host a resident artist at Dakota Day this year. David Louis is a nationally-recognized Dakota artist\, whose work in quillwork and beading using traditional methods has been featured in museums and shops throughout the United States. David Louis grew up on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota reservation in a very traditional family. He took up the mission of learning quillwork on his own about 30 years ago when he realized it was in danger of dying out. By studying museum collections and talking with elders\, David gained a foundation for teaching himself the techniques of quillwork. David will be demonstrating his art during Dakota Day\, the culmination of a week-long residency at Gibbs Farm. Gibbs Farm tells the true story of the pioneering Gibbs family of Heman and Jane Gibbs and their friendship with the Dakota of Cloud Man’s village. Gibbs Farm offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore a unique story that spanned generations and ignored the cultural tensions of the time. The Dakota people and the Gibbs family achieved what society at large could not\, providing mutual aid and friendship. \nThe Dakota’s friendly interactions with the Gibbs\, and the hospitality shown by both sides began in 1835 when Jane DeBow (Gibbs) arrived at Fort Snelling as a child of eight\, and lived among Cloud Man’s band of Dakota on the shores of Lake Calhoun in present-day Minneapolis. She learned to speak Dakota and gained an intimate knowledge of the Dakota way of life. The Dakota gave her the name “Little Bird That Was Caught.” Later\, when Jane had married Heman Gibbs and they had acquired their farmstead where the Farm is today\, Cloud Man’s Dakota band\, sometimes numbering as many as 150\, camped on the Gibbs’ farm to rest and visit Jane\, often for as long as three weeks. Many in this band were Jane’s childhood friends\, and appreciated Heman and Jane’s hospitality. \nGibbs Farm continues that tradition today\, working closely in partnership with the Dakota community to provide educational opportunities to families\, schools and day campers about Minnesota’s First People. \nGibbs Farm offers a unique look at the two cultures that existed peacefully side by side at the farm\, their methods of housing and agriculture\, and provides insight into the Gibbs’ special relationship with the Dakota. Gibbs Farm has become nationally known for its presentations of historic pioneer and Dakota life and culture. Gibbs’ interpreters frequently visit local schools to educate students on Dakota life and culture. \nGibbs Farm features tipi\, a Dakota summer bark lodge\, farm buildings\, a one-room-schoolhouse\, a replica of the original “soddy” sod house that the Gibbs built\, the Gibbs’ original farmhouse\, and three gardens that demonstrate the agricultural methods of the Dakota\, the pioneers and the Victorians\, and a restored prairie.
