No reservations needed. \nJoin RCHS for History Revealed\, our program series featuring presentations and tours from the best of local historians\, authors and archaeologists\, with a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nRCHS Editor Meredith Cummings will emcee a fascinating discussion on three Jewish writers who made their homes in Saint Paul\, but who were national figures – William Hoffman\, Norman Katkov and Max Shulman. \nWilliam Hoffman (1914-1990) was a very well-known author whose works included “Tales of Hoffman\,” “Mendel\,”  “Neighborhood House: A Brief History of the First 75 Years\, 1897-1972” and writing for the Saint Paul Jewish News\, and other publications. \nNorman Katkov (1918-2009) authored short stories and tv scripts (Wild Wild West\, Bonanza\, Ben Casey\, and others)\, plus “A Little Sleep\, A Little Slumber\,” “The Judas Kiss\,” “Millionaires Row” and other books and novels. \nMax Shulman (1919-1988) was a screenwriter for “The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis\,” and many films\, including “The Tender Trap.” His books include “Barefoot Boy with Cheek\,” “The Feather Merchant\,” “Rally Round the Flag Boys!” and many short stories. \nReadings from their writings\, video clips of their films and TV episodes\, the stories of their lives as told by family members\, and the history of their neighborhoods in Saint Paul will be part of the discussion. \nPanel Members: \n\nMeredith Cummings\, RCHS Editor and panel emcee\nJon Hoffman\, son of author William Hoffman\nPaul D. She was working at the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1890 at the time of the Wounded Knee Massacre. She met and fell in love with Dr. Charles Eastman\, a noted Native American medical doctor who was the physician at the reservation during the tragedy. \nThey married in 1891 and moved to St. Paul in 1893 where they lived until 1897. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society presents \nGreg Brick\, Minnesota Caves: History and Lore\nHistory Revealed Series\nJanuary 25\, 2018\nThursday\, 7:00 pm\nRamsey County Roseville Library\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for History Revealed in 2018\, featuring the best of local history authors\, historians and archaeologists talking about a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nMinnesota Caves: History and Lore (Arcadia Publishing\, 2017) is Greg’s third book on caves and the first book on this exact topic in 50 years. This powerpoint tour of Minnesota caves highlights the caves with significant narrative history\, illustrated with historic images\, never before published\, from the National Cave Museum in Kentucky. While most of the caves still exist\, many are not publicly accessible\, and some never did exist except in the minds of explorers. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. \nGreg Brick Ph.D. was employed as a hydrogeologist at several environmental consulting firms\, has taught geology at local colleges and universities\, and now works on the Minnesota Spring Inventory at the Department of Natural Resources. He has edited the Journal of Spelean History since 2003\, published more than 100 articles about caves\, and was the recipient of the 2005 Cave History Award from the National Speleological Society. His first book\, Iowa Underground: A Guide to the State’s Subterranean Treasures\, was published by Trails Media Group in 2004. His second book\, Subterranean Twin Cities\, published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2009\, won an award from the American Institute of Architects. His work has been featured in National Geographic Adventure magazine as well as on the History Channel. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nJohn Watson Milton\, For the Good of the Order: Nick Coleman\n\nHistory Revealed Series\nNovember 30\, 2017\nThursday\, 7:00 pm\nRamsey County Roseville Library\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for a new series\, History Revealed\, featuring the best of local history authors talking about a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nJohn Watson Milton will present the story of Nick Coleman\, the son of Irish immigrants who was an influential Minnesota state senator in the 1960’s and 1970’s\, and had an unsuccessful run for Governor. Coleman was instrumental in changing the Minnesota legislative branch and its agenda to a more progressive and respected one\, and was also instrumental in passing many reforms\, including the “Minnesota Miracle\,” legislation that shifted the burden for public education from property taxes to a more progressive state income tax. The presentation will touch on Coleman’s work and accomplishments\, the many great leaders he worked with from both sides of the political line\, and his legacy to Minnesota\, the nation and his family. \nMilton is the author of For the Good of the Order\, Nick Coleman and the High Tide of Liberal Politics in Minnesota\, published by RCHS. Books will be available for purchase. \n \nJohn Watson Milton was born in St. Paul\, Minnesota. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton and the Woodrow Wilson School; he also studied at the Harvard School of Business. At Princeton he was the editorial chairman of The Daily Princetonian. Milton has published a wide variety of written works\, including poetry\, essay\, recipes\, speeches and short stories. He has written numerous articles for Ramsey County History magazine\, and authored For the Good of the Order\, Nick Coleman and the High Tide of Liberal Politics in Minnesota\, published by RCHS. His biographical novel\, The Fallen Nightingale\, won two national awards for historical fiction. The author lives with his Panamanian-born wife\, Maureen Angélica Acosta\, on a small farm in Afton\, Minnesota\, where he writes and grows wine-grapes. \nAs a Princeton sophomore\, Milton received a piece of valuable advice from Nobel Laureate Ernest Hemingway\, who told him: “If you’re a writer\, you write. No matter what happened last night\, no matter how much you drank\, no matter whose bed you climbed out of in the morning\, you write. Ms. Finstad Hanson will illustrate her talk with exterior images of these 19th- and 20th-century architectural gems. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nJohn Anfinson\, Fountains of Life and Death: The Origins of the Twin Cities Water Supply System\nHistory Revealed Series\nSeptember 21\, 2017\nThursday\, noon\nLandmark Center Gallery\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for a new series\, History Revealed\, featuring the best of local history authors talking about a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nIn this presentation\, John Anfinson examines the origins of the Minneapolis and St. Paul water supply systems. Unknowingly\, the two cities became a human experiment about the consequences of taking our drinking water for granted and of ignoring obvious solutions. Anfinson sets the Twin Cities in the context of water supply development in the nation. At a time when water supplies around the country are of great concern\, his talk reminds us of how far we have come but that we should not forget where our water comes from and what might be in it. \nDr. John Anfinson is the Superintendent of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area\, the Twin Cities National Park. Prior to his appointment\, he was Chief Resource Manager\, and the Historian and Cultural Resources Specialist. He was the District Historian\, St. Paul District\, Corps of Engineers\, 1980-2000\, and was the Chief of the District Cultural Resources Staff. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nStephen Osman: Fort Snelling and the Civil War\nHistory Revealed Series\nApril 20\, 2017\nThursday\, 7 p.m.\nRamsey County Library – Roseville\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for a new series\, History Revealed\, featuring the best of local history authors talking about a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nOn April 20\, Stephen Osman discusses the role of Fort Snelling as a major military station in Minnesota during the Civil War\, and presents his new book\, “Fort Snelling and the Civil War\,” to be released this spring by the Ramsey County Historical Society. Stephen will be available for questions\, and to sign books. \nOne hundred fifty years ago our state offered the first volunteers to defend the Union. Every Minnesota soldier passed through historic Fort Snelling\, reactivated after it had been sold to a developer. The Fort eventually expanded to include several large camps of Native Americans\, massive stock yards\, huge warehouses\, and secure barracks for draftees before reverting to a supply depot in 1865. \nStephen Osman managed Historic Fort Snelling for over three decades and actively researches\, speaks and writes about Minnesota’s role in the Civil War and the U.S. Dakota War of 1862. Osman served with the US Army Reserve in Psychological Operations at Fort Snelling\, and has served on the boards of the Minnesota Military Museum\, the Friends of Fort Snelling\, the Twin Cities Civil War Roundtable. \nPlease join RCHS and Stephen Osman on April 20 for this fascinating discussion and book signing. No reservations needed. \nLearn more about the early inhabitants of our area as archaeologist Jeremy Nienow presents findings from last summer’s 2016 volunteer archaeological survey around Lake Vadnais\, sponsored by the North Lake Owasso Neighborhood Group. \nDr. Nienow has been working with the North Lake Owasso Neighborhood Group and the Shoreview Historical Society to expand the archaeological findings along some of the Shoreview area lakes. Their work began with the goal of discovering the historical Native American passage through the areas of Lakes Owasso and Wabasso. Artifacts and science led one mile east to Vadnais Lake in 2016 with yet more results. Both 2015 and 2016 on-site shovel tests and artifact findings are now documented and submitted to the State of MN. DESCRIPTION:In Honor of Pearl Harbor \nIn honor of the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor that ushered the US into WWII on December 7\, 1941\, at 7:48 am\, we want to thank all the service men and women from Ramsey County and throughout the US\, and their families. The destroyer U.S.S. Ward and her mostly Saint Paul crew have been credited for firing the first shot of WWII (by the United States)\, sinking a Japanese submarine at the mouth of Pearl Harbor an hour before the air attack. First launched in 1918\, the photo is of the burning of the U.S.S. Ward from an air strike\, three years to the day after the attack at Pearl Harbor.
