Scott Fitzgerald on this immersive walking tour through St. Paul\, Minnesota. Led by historian Mark Taylor\, you’ll explore the streets that shaped Fitzgerald’s early life\, from his childhood homes to the places that inspired his iconic stories. Along the way\, uncover the ambition\, romance\, and contradictions that defined a literary legend. Perfect for book lovers and history enthusiasts alike\, this tour brings the Jazz Age vividly to life in the city Fitzgerald never forgot—experience hidden details\, rare anecdotes\, and surprising connections that reveal a deeper understanding of his enduring legacy today and beyond for generations ahead. \nMark Taylor is a scholar of F. Scott Fitzgerald historical interpreter for the James J. Hill House. In addition to his well-loved Fitzgerald tours for the MN Historical Society and others\, he spoke at the International F. Scott Fitzgerald Society’s 16th international conference in Växjö\, Sweden in 2023. \nMark’s educational background is in teaching. He received his teaching degree and license from Hamline University and taught Social Studies at Mounds Park Academy and the Hill-Murray School. Mark also has his B.A. in Political Science from Knox University. \nMark served as co-chair of the first Bad Luck Ball last year and is continuing in that role this year. He and wife Pondie have two active little Saint Paul park users – Miles and Vivian. Their dog Penny Lane won the Conservancy’s first #StPaulBarks contest in 2021.

The tours will each focus on a different area of the cemetery\, with October 14 covering the North End and October 21 covering the South End. \nMore info on South Tour on October 21\, 2026. \nJoin experienced tour guide and historian Denise Dunnell Wells on a fascinating outdoor walking tour of Saint Paul’s famous Oakland Cemetery. The tour will feature the resting places of some of Saint Paul’s most famous and infamous personalities. Denise will give you an overview of the cemetery’s history\, discuss some of its legends\, and show us the final resting places of these citizens. \nNORTH TOUR 10/14/2026:\n\nTour is outside only – please wear walking shoes and dress for the weather.\nThere are some hills on the tour and prepare to be on your feet for up to two hours.\nThere are no restrooms in the cemetery.\nOakland Cemetery is located at 927 Jackson Street\, Saint Paul.\nPlease do not park in the parking lot or in front of the office.  It is fine to park along the roads in the cemetery\, just make sure that traffic can get by.\nWe will meet outside of the office.\n\nAbout Oakland Cemetery: \nOakland Cemetery is the Midwest’s oldest operating cemetery and has been a place of internment for many different groups in the Ramsey County community. There are lots for Civil War and Spanish-American War veterans\, firefighters\, and a variety of nationalities. The cemetery has a park-like quality with over 25\,000 trees and many walking paths. In its current era\, the cemetery has become a final resting area for many members of the Hmong community\, which has put our current landscape in conversation with the pioneers who made this area what it is.
