SUMMARY:History Revealed: Archaeology at Lake Vadnais
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jeremy Nienow\, Archaeology at Lake Vadnais\nHistory Revealed Series\nMarch 13\, 2017\nMonday\, 7 p.m.\nRamsey County Library – Shoreview\nFree and open to all. No reservations needed. \nLearn more about the early inhabitants of our area as archaeologist Jeremy Nienow presents findings from last summer’s 2016 volunteer archaeological survey around Lake Vadnais\, sponsored by the North Lake Owasso Neighborhood Group. \nDr. Nienow has been working with the North Lake Owasso Neighborhood Group and the Shoreview Historical Society to expand the archaeological findings along some of the Shoreview area lakes. Their work began with the goal of discovering the historical Native American passage through the areas of Lakes Owasso and Wabasso. Artifacts and science led one mile east to Vadnais Lake in 2016 with yet more results. Both 2015 and 2016 on-site shovel tests and artifact findings are now documented and submitted to the State of MN. Now in 2017\, plans are being continued into Phase II field testing. \nDr. Nienow will speak on his expertise and experience with a focus on these recent projects in Shoreview and Vadnais Heights along with explanations in the process of artifact findings and their historical value\, and you can find out how you can become involved in future excavations. \nThis presentation is sponsored by the Shoreview Area Historical Society\, partnered with RCHS. \nImage of volunteers at Lake Vadnais by Jeremy Nienow. \nHistory Revealed Program Series\nPlease note that topics and speakers may change. SUMMARY:History Revealed: Fort Snelling & the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nStephen Osman: Fort Snelling and the Civil War\nHistory Revealed Series\nApril 20\, 2017\nThursday\, 7 p.m.\nRamsey County Library – Roseville\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for a new series\, History Revealed\, featuring the best of local history authors talking about a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nOn April 20\, Stephen Osman discusses the role of Fort Snelling as a major military station in Minnesota during the Civil War\, and presents his new book\, “Fort Snelling and the Civil War\,” to be released this spring by the Ramsey County Historical Society. Stephen will be available for questions\, and to sign books. \nOne hundred fifty years ago our state offered the first volunteers to defend the Union. Every Minnesota soldier passed through historic Fort Snelling\, reactivated after it had been sold to a developer. The Fort eventually expanded to include several large camps of Native Americans\, massive stock yards\, huge warehouses\, and secure barracks for draftees before reverting to a supply depot in 1865. \nStephen Osman managed Historic Fort Snelling for over three decades and actively researches\, speaks and writes about Minnesota’s role in the Civil War and the U.S. Dakota War of 1862. Osman served with the US Army Reserve in Psychological Operations at Fort Snelling\, and has served on the boards of the Minnesota Military Museum\, the Friends of Fort Snelling\, the Twin Cities Civil War Roundtable. \nPlease join RCHS and Stephen Osman on April 20 for this fascinating discussion and book signing. SUMMARY:Dakota Day 2017
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Minnesota’s First People! \nDakota Day\nGibbs Farm Tipi\nJoin us as we celebrate the lifeways\, language\, stories\, arts\, and games of Minnesota’s First People. \nHave you ever wondered what the word Minnesota really means? Wanted to make your own beaded bracelet? Or discover why trade was important to Dakota people in the early 1800s? You can discover all this and much more at Gibbs Farm during Dakota Day\, on June 24\, 2017\, from 10 am-4 pm! \nDakota Day will highlight the stories and language\, the crafts\, the food and fun that are all part of the lives of the Dakota. The event is open to the public\, and provides an exciting and educational experience appropriate for families of all ages. Costumed interpreters will greet visitors\, and will provide activities\, tours\, and insights. \nWe are also excited to host a resident artist at Dakota Day this year. David Louis is a nationally-recognized Dakota artist\, whose work in quillwork and beading using traditional methods has been featured in museums and shops throughout the United States. David Louis grew up on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota reservation in a very traditional family. He took up the mission of learning quillwork on his own about 30 years ago when he realized it was in danger of dying out. By studying museum collections and talking with elders\, David gained a foundation for teaching himself the techniques of quillwork. David will be demonstrating his art during Dakota Day\, the culmination of a week-long residency at Gibbs Farm. (Bio from the South Dakota Arts Council). \nDakota Day Schedule of Tours & Events \nTours \n\nStep Into Jane’s Pioneer World: Farmhouse Tours\n10:30 am\, 11:30 am\, 12:30 pm\, 1:30 pm\, 2:30 pm\nSay It In Dakota: Mini-Language Presentation\n10:30 am\, 11:30 am\, 12:30 pm\, 1:30 pm\, 2:30 pm\nJane & the Dakota: Mini-History Presentations\nStories about Jane\, Cloud Man\, Lawrence Talliaferro\, the Pond brothers\, Seth Eastman.\n11:00 am\, 12:00 noon\, 1:00 pm\, 2:00 pm\, 3:00 pm\nShelters Tour: Replica “Soddy\,” Dakota Summer Bark Lodge\, Tipi\n10:30 am\, 11:30 am\, 12:30 pm\, 1:30 pm\, 2:30 pm\n\nOngoing \n\nThe Hunt & Archery\nTipi Life & Buffalo Nation\nPsin (Wild Rice): Mainstay of Dakota Diet\nHow Trade Inspired a New Dakota Art Form\nQuillwork and Beadmaking Demonstrations with resident Dakota artist David Louis at 11:00 am-12:00 noon\, and 1:00-2:00 pm. Gibbs Farm tells the true story of the pioneering Gibbs family of Heman and Jane Gibbs and their friendship with the Dakota of Cloud Man’s village. Gibbs Farm offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore a unique story that spanned generations and ignored the cultural tensions of the time. The Dakota people and the Gibbs family achieved what society at large could not\, providing mutual aid and friendship. \nThe Dakota’s friendly interactions with the Gibbs\, and the hospitality shown by both sides began in 1835 when Jane DeBow (Gibbs) arrived at Fort Snelling as a child of eight\, and lived among Cloud Man’s band of Dakota on the shores of Lake Calhoun in present-day Minneapolis. She learned to speak Dakota and gained an intimate knowledge of the Dakota way of life. The Dakota gave her the name “Little Bird That Was Caught.” Later\, when Jane had married Heman Gibbs and they had acquired their farmstead where the Farm is today\, Cloud Man’s Dakota band\, sometimes numbering as many as 150\, camped on the Gibbs’ farm to rest and visit Jane\, often for as long as three weeks. Many in this band were Jane’s childhood friends\, and appreciated Heman and Jane’s hospitality. \nGibbs Farm continues that tradition today\, working closely in partnership with the Dakota community to provide educational opportunities to families\, schools and day campers about Minnesota’s First People. \nGibbs Farm offers a unique look at the two cultures that existed peacefully side by side at the farm\, their methods of housing and agriculture\, and provides insight into the Gibbs’ special relationship with the Dakota. Gibbs Farm has become nationally known for its presentations of historic pioneer and Dakota life and culture. Gibbs’ interpreters frequently visit local schools to educate students on Dakota life and culture. \nGibbs Farm features tipi\, a Dakota summer bark lodge\, farm buildings\, a one-room-schoolhouse\, a replica of the original “soddy” sod house that the Gibbs built\, the Gibbs’ original farmhouse\, and three gardens that demonstrate the agricultural methods of the Dakota\, the pioneers and the Victorians\, and a restored prairie. Exhibits show farm implements\, household furnishings\, clothing\, kitchen implements\, and more. Costumed interpreters will guide visitors and answer questions. \nAdmission for Dakota Day is $8 adults\, $7 seniors (62+)\, $5 children (4+)\, free for RCHS members. \nFor more information\, please call the Gibbs Farm at 651-646-8629\, or Contact Us. \nDakota Day
