From the State Fair’s national leadership in the campaign to “Win the War with Food\,” to large war exhibits\, military pageants\, and Grandstand shows depicting major battles\, discover the fascinating history of Minnesota’s beloved State Fair during this challenging era. \nMark Haidet\nMark Haidet worked for the Minnesota Historical Society for more than 36 years – 10 years as a historian and 26 years in the Development Office. As Director of Development for the program’s first 16 years\, he built a comprehensive program and led three major campaigns for the Minnesota History Center\, Mill City Museum and the Greatest Generation Project. He closed his career with three years at the State Fair Foundation where he completed the campaign to build the Fair’s new History & Heritage Center. DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Minnesota’s First People.\nCelebrating the Dakota\, Past and Present \nPrograms for the day will include stations where guests can learn about the seasonal life of the Dakota of Cloud Man’s Village: Wild Ricing\, Tipi Life\, a tour of our replica Bark Lodge\, and much more! U of MN Dakota Language Instructors will be leading mini-language sessions and Site Interpreter Nick Anderson will also be demonstrating traditional and modern hide tanning techniques. \nOther activities from our partners include: \nDakota Wicohan is excited to participate in the upcoming Prairie Festival at Gibbs Farm. We will be bringing our Wikoska/Wiciyenna as they represent the very essence of Dakota Wicohan. Dressed in their traditional skirts\, these youth will be singing Dakota songs\, showcasing the kinship sisterhood these young women have developed. We will also be bringing some artwork that the youth painted as well as some horse regalia that some of the staff have created. All in all\, this is guaranteed to be a fun event. We look forward to seeing everybody there! \nDakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye will be showcasing their language materials including their upcoming language dictionary app. \nNative Food Perspectives will be serving Wild Rice Salad\, Cornbread Muffins and Cedar Tea. This craft-based camp offers girls a first-hand appreciation of the daily lives of girls in days gone by.\nSome activities include attending a quilting bee\, creating a yarn doll\, dipping candles and square dancing on Pioneer day\, putting up a tipi\, beading and making cornhusk dolls on Dakota day\, and “taking tea” and making tussie-mussies following a nature walk on Victorian day.\nBring a bag lunch each day.\nEach Thursday\, campers will hold an open house for their families. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nStephen Osman\, Fort Snelling & the Civil War: Daily Lives\n\nHistory Revealed: A Toast to History at Waldmann Series\nThursday\, August 9\, 2018\nWaldmann Brewery & Wurstery\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for History Revealed\, our program series featuring presentations and tours from the best of local historians\, authors and archaeologists\, with a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \n\nOne hundred fifty years ago our state offered the first volunteers to defend the Union. Every Minnesota soldier passed through historic Fort Snelling\, reactivated after it had been sold to a developer. The Fort eventually expanded to include several large camps of Native Americans\, massive stock yards\, huge warehouses\, and secure barracks for draftees before reverting to a supply depot in 1865. \n\nStephen Osman will share some of the letters\, stories and daily lives of the soldiers and civilians who lived\, worked\, and fought at Fort Snelling during the Civil War and the Dakota Conflict. The challenges faced by these young men\, many of whom had never been more than a few miles away from their out-state family farms before\, were daunting. And the Fort was not always in suitable shape to hold the vast influx of arriving recruits. Stephen will share these challenges and show images from his new book\, Fort Snelling and the Civil War\, published by RCHS. Books will be available for signing and for purchase. \n \nStephen Osman managed Historic Fort Snelling for over three decades and actively researches\, speaks and writes about Minnesota’s role in the Civil War and the U.S. Dakota War of 1862. His talk will encompass many of the issues that faced environmentalists in the history of our state. His new book\, Iron and Water\, My Life Protecting Minnesota’s Environment (University of Minnesota Press 2018) will be available for purchase and signing. \n \n\nIron and Water is Grant J. Merritt’s memoir of his life’s work on behalf of Minnesota’s people and environment and also the story of a family significant in state history. Chronicling the discovery of vast iron deposits on the Mesabi Range and the fight to save Lake Superior and Minnesota’s natural riches\, Merritt reveals how individuals can change the world. \nBorn in Duluth in 1934\, Grant Merritt has demonstrated his deep commitment to environmental issues throughout his distinguished career. A practicing attorney for the law firm of Kalina\, Wills\, Gisvold & Clark\, P.L.L.P.\, Merritt worked in the areas of environmental regulation and litigation\, transportation\, municipal law\, governmental relations\, and real estate. In addition\, Merritt is a member of the Anoka County Bar Association and the Minnesota State Bar Association\, secretary and board member of the Canada-Minnesota Business Council and board member for Clean Water Action. Merritt also served as Commissioner of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) from 1971-1975 and as a member of the Great Lakes Water Quality Board from 1972-1975. The Capitol now offers more public space\, and the building’s historic furniture\, artwork\, and interior decorations have been restored to their 1905 appearance. Learn about the history and rehabilitation of this iconic building from Denis P. Gardner\, Minnesota’s National Register Historian at the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office. Gardner is the author of the recently-released book Our Minnesota State Capitol: From Groundbreaking through Restoration. \nThe Minnesota State Capitol is both an architectural masterpiece and a revered public building. This beautiful Renaissance Revival structure is the heart of the state’s civic life\, a place for celebrations\, demonstrations\, arguments\, and accomplishments. It’s where history happens. \n\n\n\n\nCompleted in 1905\, the capitol is a grand building on a grand scale\, and it reflected Minnesota’s growing cosmopolitanism. Noted architect Cass Gilbert won the design competition and then fought ferociously to see his vision built. At construction\, the capitol was a marvel of modern engineering\, with its own heating plant and the second-largest self-supported marble dome in the world. And more than a century later\, after a meticulous renovation in 2015–17\, the building glows again with its original beauty. \nThis book includes stories of the capitol’s construction and restoration\, laborers and craftspeople\, fine art and furnishings\, and politics and protests. It features remarkable photographs\, recently saved from a dumpster\, that document the original construction. And it celebrates this beloved building’s continued life at the center of the state’s civic culture. \n\n\n\n\nDenis P. Gardner is the National Register Historian at the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office in St. Paul\, where he reviews the eligibility of properties for the National Register of Historic Places. Geographer & author Bill Lindeke will discuss how the Twin Cities have developed from simple trading posts on the banks of the Mississippi in “the land of 10\,000 lakes\,” and will show photos from his new coffee table book\, “Minneapolis-St. Paul: Then and Now” (Pavilion Press). \nBill will highlight the most interesting places in Saint Paul and the Twin Cities that show the most change from the 19th century to current times with historic and current photographs and offer in-depth descriptions of the sites. The “then” photos are historic images which range from the 1870s to the 1950s. The “now” photos were taken in the summer of 2017 by Karl Mondon of San Francisco\, California. Bill will also show sites that “didn’t make the cut” into the book. \n“Minneapolis-St. Paul Then and Now” has historic and current photos with historical narrative captions for over one hundred historic sites in Minneapolis\, Saint Paul\, South Saint Paul\, Edina\, and the Fort Snelling Unorganized Territory. \nThe book will be available for purchase and signing at the presentation. \nPlease Note: The Roseville Library does not have an available connection that allows us to take credit cards\, so we are not always able to accommodate credit card sales. By depicting wildlife as part of an ecological setting\, and highlighting places in need of preservation\, they played a critical role in building the conservation movement. The Bell Museum’s dioramas were created during the peak of the diorama era and are considered among the finest in the world. When the Bell Museum started to plan for a new facility\, moving and re-interpreting the dioramas was a central concern. \nIn this talk\, Don will trace the history of dioramas\, introduce the artists and naturalists who created the dioramas here in Minnesota\, and discuss the process of moving and re-imagining them for the new Bell Museum \nAbout Don Luce\, Curator of Exhibits\, Bell Museum\, University of Minnesota \nDon Luce has worked in the museum world for four decades. He earned a degree in Zoology and a master degree in Medical and Biological Illustration from the University of Michigan. At the Bell Museum\, he has combined his interests in science\, art and nature to produce original temporary and permanent exhibitions. Exhibition topics included art and nature\, ecology\, evolution\, animal behavior\, endangered species\, and current University research. Many of these exhibitions toured nationally as part of Bell Museum’s Touring Exhibition Service. \nAs curator of exhibits\, he also curates the museum’s collection of art\, which includes many works by Francis Lee Jaques who painted the museum’s dioramas\, a complete set of John James Audubon’s original Birds of America folio\, and many other historical and contemporary works of wildlife art. \nFor nearly two decades\, Don has worked on plans for a new Bell Museum. The project included the move and restoration of the museums historic dioramas\, and the design of new permanent exhibition galleries. \nDon also remains active as an illustrator and artist. He illustrated books such as Minnesota’s Natural Heritage by John Tester\, and has been an artist-in-residence with the National Park Service. DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society Presents\nSusan Bartlett Foote\, The Crusade for Forgotten Souls: Reforming Minnesota’s Mental Health Institutions\, 1946-1954\n\nHistory Revealed Landmark Lunch Series\nOctober 10\, 2018\nWednesday\, noon-1:00 pm\nLandmark Center\nFree and open to all. \nJoin RCHS for History Revealed\, our program series featuring presentations and tours from the best of local historians\, authors and archaeologists\, with a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nThe Crusade for Forgotten Souls recounts Minnesota’s reform movement that broke the stigma surrounding mental illness\, publicized the painful truth about the state’s asylums\, and resulted in the first legislative steps toward a modern mental health system. Susan will tell the stories of the early advocates for compassionate care of the mentally ill who made the crusade a success. Susan will also discuss the challenges and issues that faced these advocates in Ramsey County\, and the reforms that they set in place. The Crusade for Forgotten Souls will be available for purchase and for signing. \nSusan Bartlett Foote is professor emerita in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota\, where she was head of the Division of Health Policy and Management from 1999 to 2005.
