SUMMARY:Volunteer: Friday Farm Chores
DESCRIPTION:Help us tackle our to-do list. Friday Farm Chore volunteer days are happening though out our season\, the outdoor projects change weekly usually planting\, watering\, weeding\, light landscape and orchard projects. \n  \nProjects are great for students\, families\, small groups (scouts\, 4-H ect.) and individuals. Children under 12 should sign up with an adult. \n  \nNo experience necessary! Projects will be lead by Gibbs Farm staff and volunteers and all supplies materials and instructions. \nGibbs Farm will be open to the public after this event\, volunteers are encouraged to stay\, take a tour or visit with the animals at no admission charge. \nDay of Instructions: \n  \nVolunteers should park in the Gibbs Farm public parking lot of Cleveland Ave and enter the site through the wooden gates. \nPlease wear close-toed shoes and clothes you can work in. Light snacks are provided\, but feel free to bring your own. \nThere are bathrooms and a drinking fountain with water bottle filler on site.

Growing up in a family of artists\, Jeanne started working as a newspaper illustrator. Along the way\, she taught at the University of Alaska-Anchorage where she also led the design department. For eighteen years\, Jeanne was the creative director at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in Saint Paul\, Minnesota. Her work appears in public & private collections. She has been honored with artist-in-residencies in Arles\, France; Mesa Verde National Park\, Colorado; Hot Springs National Park\, Arkansas; St. Croix Watershed Research Station as the Artist at Pine Needles\, Minnesota; the Western Wisconsin Land Trust at the Pine Creek Restoration Project\, Wisconsin; Whiskeytown National Recreation Area\, California; and Juneau\, Alaska at the Ernest Gruening Historic Site. Jeanne has participated in International Urban Sketchers Symposiums in Portugal and the Netherlands.

You will receive a confirmation email after registering.\nFor questions\, please email events@rchs.com \nJoin Public Historian\, Archaeologist\, and Conservator\, Christopher Rico (M.HSPH) for a focused discussion on the topic of representation and access in museum collections and how to care for and preserve your personal collections like a museum conservator. In this program\, Christopher will talk about some of the social and cultural issues connected to collecting institutes\, how these issues effect different communities\, and how it has led to the growth of grassroots community preservation initiatives and a growing need for the sharing of resources and knowledge in preservation techniques. \nMany museums and collecting institutions task themselves with adding to and maintaining their collections of 3-D objects\, books\, paper files\, and the digital and physical archives which accompany them. This task is often made a central pillar of a collecting institution’s mission as it is held that through this process\, knowledges may be preserved\, access to them expanded\, and through interpretation new understandings created. However\, being that this practice is historically rooted to empire and colonialism\, there is an undeniable effect on the way in which this mission has been conducted. Furthermore\, additional factors within institutions affect how collections are managed and what is deemed worthy of collection. Among other effects\, this results in the exclusion of certain communities within collections\, barriers to access\, and questions about the accuracy of knowledge provided by collections and their interpretation. In response to these issues\, the practices of community archiving and grassroots preservation have grown exponentially in recent decades\, creating a need for access to complex resources and knowledges often held by or provided exclusively to collecting institutions. \nChris Rico has a robust and diverse field of experience in heritage studies spanning over the last six years. He obtained his master’s degree at the University of Minnesota in Heritage Studies and Public History and has been working in various community development positions since. His breadth of experience includes extensive archival use\, processing\, and research experience\, community driven and engaged public history projects\, oral histories\, and preservation and special collections management.

DESCRIPTION:Help us tackle our to-do list! No experience is necessary to help us complete seasonal orchard tasks. Gibbs Farm Heritage orchard has over 30 varieties of heirloom and UMN developed apples. In order to keep our crop safe from insects without using harsh chemical pesticides we use more time intensive methods like apple bagging\, sticky traps\, fencing and organic treatments. \nProjects are great for students\, families\, small groups (scouts\, 4-H ect.) and individuals. Children under 12 should sign up with an adult. \nClick Here to Register for Friday Farm Chores \nProjects will be lead by Gibbs Farm staff and volunteers and all supplies materials and instructions. \n  \nDay of Instructions: \n  \nVolunteers should park in the Gibbs Farm public parking lot of Cleveland Ave and enter the site through the wooden gates. \nPlease wear close-toed shoes and clothes you can work in. Light snacks are provided\, but feel free to bring your own. \nThere are bathrooms and a drinking fountain with water bottle filler on site.

DESCRIPTION:  \nGibbs Farm Apple Festival is back this year on September 30th from 10-2\, this all ages fall celebration has something for the whole family! \nVisitors can tour the orchard\, learn apple facts\, try their hand at cider pressing and sample apples not often seen in the grocery store or farmer’s market. Our Heritage Orchard has about 30 types of apples including heirloom and UofM developed varieties. We will have several “apple tasting flights” to help you experience these special fruits! \nSeveral of our partners will be helping us take advantage of the season: \nMusic by Light of the Moon\, \nFace Painting with Barbara from Rainbow Party Arts\, \nNative Seed Cleaning with MN Seed\, \nWoodblock Prints with Peggy Stern \nDakota language books will be for sale by Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye including books illustrated and translated by Katie Bendickson. \nSolar observing with our neighbors at the Bell Museum \nPatricia Bauer and Dave Geister will share their newest book Making Minnesota and lead a seed art activity. \nPlus Apple Treats and other activities including: Historic Farmhouse Tours\, pioneer play kitchen\, apple games\, seed art and a prairie scavenger hunt. \nFeel free to bring your own snack or lunch to enjoy. All treats\, tours and activities are included in the admission price. Admission is $10 for adults\, $7 for seniors (62+)\, $5 for children 4-16\, free for children 3 and under. RCHS Members visit Gibbs Farm for free!

DESCRIPTION:Fall is a great time to get some gardening done in Minnesota! We need help dividing and moving plants on site. We will be focusing mostly on shade loving native plants. Irises\, Wild Ginger\, May Apples and Solomon’s Seal. DESCRIPTION:Help us tackle our to-do list! No experience is necessary to help us complete seasonal  tasks. This October we will be cleaning up gardens and doing some light landscaping. \nProjects are great for students\, families\, small groups (scouts\, 4-H ect.) and individuals. Children under 12 should sign up with an adult. \nClick Here to Register for Friday Farm Chores \nProjects will be lead by Gibbs Farm staff and volunteers and all supplies materials and instructions. \n  \nDay of Instructions: \n  \nVolunteers should park in the Gibbs Farm public parking lot of Cleveland Ave and enter the site through the wooden gates. \nPlease wear close-toed shoes and clothes you can work in. Light snacks are provided\, but feel free to bring your own. \nThere are bathrooms and a drinking fountain with water bottle filler on site.

DESCRIPTION:History Revealed: Oakland Cemetery Historic Walking Tour \nThursday\, October 12\, 2023\n1:00 am-2:30 pm \nTo register: Oakland Cemetery Walking Tour 2023 \nSpace is limited to 20\, reserve today! \nJoin experienced tour guide and historian Denise Dunnell Wells on a fascinating outdoor walking tour of Saint Paul’s famous Oakland Cemetery. The tour will feature the resting places of some of Saint Paul’s most famous and infamous personalities. It is all a matter of perspective! Denise will give you an overview of the cemetery’s history\, discuss some of its legends\, and show us the final resting places of these citizens. \n\nTour is outside only – please wear walking shoes and dress for the weather.\nThere are some hills on the tour and prepare to be on your feet for two hours.\nThere are no restrooms in the cemetery.\nOakland Cemetery is located at 927 Jackson Street\, Saint Paul.\nPlease park in the fenced-in lot that is off of Sims and Jackson\, by the Main Office.\nWe will meet at the green cement block at the beginning of the parking lot.\n\nIn case of severe weather\, or if you have other questions\, please check with RCHS at events@rchs.com \nDenise Dunnell Wells\nDenise Dunnell Wells is a former Alexander Ramsey House docent and has led many popular tours of Irvine Park.
