Oakland Cemetery Holds Many Caught Up in the U.S.-Dakota War

Many participants of the bloody US Dakota War of 1862 are interred in St. Paul’s Oakland Cemetery. This article summarizes key events of the war, with an emphasis on the experiences of those who are linked to this violence and are buried at the cemetery. Some of those who died in the war whose graves are at Oakland include: William Forbes, Andrew Myrick, Nathan Myrick, four members of the Kochendorfer family, Mary Schwandt, Martin Clum, Justus Ramsey, Charles E. Flandrau, Henry H. Sibley, William Crooks, Return I. Holcombe, and Hiram P. Grant. A total of at least thirty-two graves at Oakland belong to those of people associated with the war. No Dakota are buried there.
