Encamped at Fairgrounds, Minnesota Troops Fight Typhoid Fever Epidemic of 1898
Author: Herbert F.R. Plass

Some 180 members of the 12th, 14th, and 15th Minnesota Infantry Regiments who had been recruited to fight in the Spanish-American War in 1898 contracted typhoid at an encampment at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Unsanitary conditions included faulty latrines and uncontrolled flies. Public health efforts to clean up the area reflected the times and available medical knowledge. Twenty soldiers died from typhoid.
