‘Reminiscences of a Lady in the Vicinity of St. Paul:’ A Sioux Medicine Dance and a
Perilous Journey
Author: Ellen Rice Hollinshead
This is an 1892 reminiscence written by the daughter of Edmund Rice and the niece of Henry M. Rice about her experiences in early Minnesota. Ellen Rice Hollinshead traveled by sled, stage, and steamboat along with Henry H. Sibley when he was elected to Congress in 1848. She recalled horseback riding on the prairie, buying fish and game from Native Americans, and attending a Dakota medicine dance, which she observed from a white perspective as a view of a foreign culture.
