Marshall Sherman and the Civil War: St. Paul’s First Medal of Honor Winner
Author: Anne Cowie
In April 1861, Marshall Sherman, age thirty-seven, a St. Paul housepainter, became one of the first to enlist in the Union Army. He fought at Bull Run, Ball’s Bluff, The Seven Days, Antietam, and Gettysburg. There, Sherman and comrades were among the troops who absorbed the desperate fury of Pickett’s Charge. At Gettysburg, Sherman emerged with the battle flag of the 28th Virginia Regiment, a flag now in the possession of the Minnesota Historical Society. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his valor. Sherman lost a leg in battle in August 1864 and returned to St. Paul, where he lived until his death in 1896.
