From Iceboxes to Freezers: The Story of the Seeger Refrigerator Company

Author: James B. Bell

Though the name is little known outside St. Paul, no company was more important to the spread of the home refrigerator than Seeger. Founded in St. Paul in 1902, it made iceboxes, then refrigerators, under its own name and for Sears and Montgomery Ward. By the late 1940s it made more than ten percent of all refrigerators in the United States. The Seeger Company merged with Whirlpool in 1955. Whirlpool closed the St. Paul plant, and an era in the city’s manufacturing history, in 1984.
