August History Revealed with Minnesota History Day Students

August’s History Revealed Event with Team Minnesota Students

Featuring three History Day competitors from Team Minnesota, August’s History Revealed was an engaging evening of connecting history with passion. In the Sun Ray Library’s community room, friends, family, and community members gathered to hear about the students’ projects and experiences both competing and traveling to Washington, D.C. for the national contest. Their projects were centered around this year’s History Day theme, “Rights and Responsibilities in History”. Woodrow interviewed our three guests; Amelia from Highview Middle School, Morgan from St. Thomas More Catholic School, and Abby from Open World Learning Community.

Amelia’s project was a documentary titled The Stonewall Uprisings. Working with a partner, Amelia created a documentary featuring images from the Stonewall Uprising and the events that led up to and followed this historic moment. Amelia hopes to continue creating videos and would like to participate in future History Day competitions. The documentary can be found here.

Morgan created a one-person show titled The Sedition Act of 1798: The Challenge to Free Speech. Her performance won her Second Place in the Junior Individual Performance division of the national contest. Morgan wants to continue working in theater and says this experience has inspired her to further explore playwriting and producing. A video of her performance can be found here.

Abby wrote a script and performed a play with her partner titled Jane, an Underground Abortion Service: Taking Responsibility for Women’s Healthcare Under Limited Reproductive Rights. In researching this topic, Abby and her partner were able to interview people who had first-hand experience working with the Jane health organization. Abby is interested in writing and continuing to pursue history education. The video of her performance can be found here.

The theme for History Day 2026 is “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History”, and there are already students eager to begin their research for the coming year’s competition. To learn more about next year’s History Day, visit the Minnesota Historical Society site.
