December’s History Revealed with Mary Lucia

The room on the third floor of Landmark Center erupted in laughter. This wasn’t the first or last great quote from local legend, Mary Lucia, at our History Revealed event last Wednesday evening. With her good friend and colleague, Andrea Swensson, Lucia filled the room with her unique voice and storytelling. Discussing her recently released memoir What Doesn’t Kill Me Makes Me Weirder and Harder to Relate To, we experienced a wide range of human emotion. The book recounts Lucia’s harrowing experience of being stalked and the systems that failed her, and despite the intense subject matter, is told with the patented Lucia dark humor and levity.

Among stories of the pain inflicted upon her, we also heard of pets who save lives, the great experiment that is live radio, and where Lucia sees the future of this media. By the end of the evening, everyone had burst out with laughter and dabbed a tear from their eyes. With a chance to ask her questions, the audience asked for her book and movie recommendations, her song of the day, and shared heartfelt gratitude for the bravery and vulnerability with witch Lucia leads her life.
