History Revealed with Carla Rodriguez of Blkk Hand Studio

History Revealed – Blkk Hand on the History and Contemporary Use of Tintype Photography

In a studio just off of University Avenue in St. Paul, a small crowd filed in to Blkk Hand Photography Studio. We all looked on with wonder as artist Carla Rodriguez revealed the science behind the magic of tintype photography. The event began with a conversation between Carla and RCHS vice-president and fellow artist, Youa Vang. Carla took us through the process and history of tintype photography and why she embraces all of the quirks of this method of photo making. Guests had the opportunity to not only ask Carla questions, but also to have their own tintype portrait made. In participating in this historic art form, we were all able to get one degree closer to the subjects of tintype photos from bygone eras. The art practice at Blkk Hand Studio is about showing reverence for tintype photography while bringing it into modern context.
