International Trends and Services: Books for Africa – The Links Exhibit

Books for Africa
Partnership

Books for Africa provides free resources to schools and social agencies in Africa. Links members and debutantes packed books together for the organization. The books serve an important role in the rebuilding of school libraries in countries ravaged by war and internal strife.

Debutantes pack books for Books for Africa program, c. 1995.

Community Building

Chapter members work in metro-area schools with young women in the Somali and African American communities to foster relationships and to help combat cultural misunderstandings between the groups.

Global Education Series

During chapter meetings, members of the International Trends committee discuss topics and subjects to increase global awareness and knowledge of the African Diaspora. These luncheons also served as a forum to educate one another on important global women’s issues, while also learning about food, clothing, and culture.

Maama Kits

This program provides basic sterilized tools to prevent infection and death during childbirth. In some areas of Africa, women must purchase all necessary supplies for their delivery and bring them when they go to the hospital. Links members’ financial contribution provided free kits for these women in need.

Education Across The Miles

The purpose of this national program of The Links, Incorporated was to make a difference in the lives of African children and communities by funding the building of schools in South Africa. The Minneapolis/St. Paul (MN) Chapter supported the building of one school by making a donation of $10,000 to The Links Foundation.

Relief to Haiti & the Bahamas: Partnerships
Feed My Starving Children

Each month, Links members packed a food mixture that is easy to transport, simple to make by adding boiling water, and culturally acceptable worldwide. These boxes were sent to Haiti.

Heifer International

This organization provides livestock, seeds, trees, and training to families to help them break the cycle of poverty by becoming economically self sufficient. The Minneapolis/St. Paul (MN) Chapter identified Haiti as the country to receive a contribution.

International Donations

After devastating hurricanes in Haiti and the Bahamas, Links members joined together to collect goods to send for relief efforts.
