Paul Clifford Larson Research File Collection
1855 - 1996 [2019.74]This collection contains articles, building permit records, photographs and notes relating to Clarence Johnston’s life and career and the homes he designed. Material on other Minnesota architects (mostly St. Paul based) and the homes they designed also are included. These materials were compiled by Larson as background for his biographical study of Johnston published by the Afton Historical Society Press in 1996 entitled, Minnesota Architect: The Life and Work of Clarence H. Johnston. There is an occasional file on a sculptor or artist (non-architect) whose work is featured in a home documented in this collection. Photographs from the Minnesota Historical Society or other repositories or from newspaper or magazine microfilm remain in these files. Photographs taken by Larson have been removed and are cataloged separately. Many, but not all, of the photographs were reproduced in Larson’s book on Clarence Johnston, noted above.
The collection also contains biographical information on Johnston and his family, including his father and mother, wifen and sons. Newspaper clippings relating to St. Paul history, 1850s-1950s, dealing mainly with architecture are included, as well as many files dealing with specific St. Paul addresses. These files are arranged alphabetically by street name
