It Takes a Village: Building Community in the Hamline Midway Neighborhood
Author: Krista Finstad Hanson

What happens when a historian/writer becomes a homeowner? When Krista Finstad Hanson and her husband purchased a bungalow on Englewood Avenue in 1997, she couldn’t help herself. She began looking into the house history, which led her to explore the history of other homes on the street. Soon, she wanted to know more about the larger Hamline Midway neighborhood in St. Paul. Down the rabbit hole she went. Finstad Hanson shares a brief history here, focusing specifically on three addresses—1194, 1198, and 1199; the original families who called a section of Englewood Avenue (formerly Capitol) home; and the two men who built these houses in the early twentieth century: Henry Schaettgen and his son-in-law Theodore H. Mertens.
